Paying for game mods

I like it! I think workshops will now get much busier and I'm prepared to pay for a mod that took a lot of work.

Yeah I just think that websites like nexus will now shutdown since well people are going to use steam to make money since money talks. Also crooks stealing mods fom the nexus and putting it on steam for money.

Agreed, I don't mind paying for something that someone has worked hard on, and poured their blood and sweat into. It's only right. Give credit where credit is due!

I disagree, I think there will always be people and groups that will "stick it to the man" and create free content.

Like that guy making buildings for Cities: Skylines and having a Patreon. He could for instance put his buildings on this system if he wanted to. I'm mean sometimes there are some awesome mods and I think damn these people should be paid.

If a mod is quality and works well with the game, I'd purchase it. If it's buggy beyond all hope, I'd regret spending money on it.

Like everything else done via steam this going to become a flaming ball of shit.

Early access and greenlight. Ugh.

I am not opposed to great modders charging a nominal fee but this has horribly, busted and badly fucked up broken written all over.

Fuck Valve and Fuck Steam. Ea, Actiblizz and Ubisoft will copy and master the skinng art here

Whew Tank, I think you need a holiday. :)

Because of early access I was able to play Audiosurf 2 early. Because of Greenlight we got Papers Please.

It's commendable that Steam keeps trying new stuff instead of just doing nothing. I love Steam because of that.

I would have preferred a better donation model. They should have added a system that allowed you to donate to workshop devs if you wanted to, as most modders do it for fun or love of a game. Doing something for money vs doing it for love tend to yield different results.

Also my problem with paid for mods is what have they put in place to prevent abuse. What can you do if a mod that you bought gets broken with an update and the dev abandon it, or if you buy a mod only to find out that it is noway near what was marketed.

I think its a bad idea. Firstly Steam takes 75% from the price. So Modders are going to charge a big amount for a mod.
Honestly its going to do more harm than good. The donation thing is a better way(which has been around for a while now).

Its basically valve/Bethesda making money off modders.

Too bad the modder themselves will only get 25% cut for their "hard work".

My opinion, not gonna go down well...

EDIT: Damn you Tsar! beat me by like 15 seconds... :p

You have 24 hours to get a refund on it but there are so many pitfalls.

This have not been confirmed yet.

You have 24 hours to decide if you want to keep the mod or not. If you don't want it then you can get a refund. If after a while the mod becomes broken then lets hope you used it during the time that you had.

I can see some really awesome mods coming out because of this.

honestly Great mods have been coming out without this. This system is going to be abused like the green light system. Not everything valve does is good.

I got it from this: looks legit to me :)

A cool was not last night. But seeing as it might even be split between the modder and the devs. Also wtf valve does almost nothing and takes more than half.

Just ask their support o wait...

haha just read about early access mods.

Valve takes 25% Just reinforces my opinion of Valve, money printing machine, kiss HL3, Portal 3, etc goodbye and forget about it. Also, its criminal to take 75% of someones money. Does part of that money (of the 75%) to go Bethesda?

On the other side, albeit a small side, if the modder got a better %, it would be nice to thank a good modder for his/her word.

Nope its in that 25% so apperently you can desided how much goes to the modder and how much goes to the dev.

yeah, I just read the bit under the red line.

I don't want to come off as either wanting everything for free or hating valve, both of which I don't. Everyone deserves their penny, but I've lost faith in Valve the last couple of years. Their STEAM sales are legendary and have given us all a list of games that we will never complete. But, thinking about it more, I wonder, with the game marked down so much, how much does the dev get in the end?
Sure many games sell a lot on release and one can say devs and publishers saves a lot on manufacturing with digital release, still, Valve makes a lot of money.... Anyway, perhaps they are hard at work behind the scenes with HL3 or and Portal 3 or something new.

I also understand that games these days takes a lot of work, I'd say much more than 10+ years ago. Just the amount of detail to it, like graphics and assets needed in a game. So yeah, its not as easy for a modder to use four long blocks and one flat one to make a table with a simple wood texture. So yeah, some kind of compensation for a good mod is okay with me any day, but 25% the modder have to spread? Valve takes 75% for a platform that's already there?
