Is the RTS genre dying?

As the gaming scene grows, I see fewer and fewer RTS games worth a damp hit the market. Right now, Starcraft II is really the only high profile game out there. While there are a few low profile games like company of heroes that hit the market, it seems like MOBA games have pushed RTS games out.

What are your opinions on this? Do you think we'll ever see Warcraft 4 come to light?
And if it does, do you think it'll be as glorious and groundbreaking as Warcraft 3?

nope I do not think blizzard will take warcraft back to its roots as a RTS. I think we have better chance that we will see WoW 2 or its replacement. MOBA are fun and like 15 to 30 min long. The problem with RTS ussaully they take a long time and lot of time. Shorter games are more popular. Like dota2/ Call of duty/ BattleField. Or games that can be played in short stints like most RPG's.

Yeah, it's a sad case. But life is becoming too rushed. People can't sit and play a RTS game that lasts 3-4 hours. They want immediate gratification. Or quick at least. People are developing a "vending machine mentality" where they want immediate results. Obviously not everyone, but the majority. And if that is where the money is, that's where the developers will go. I'm sure there will be some Kickstarter campaigns now and again with promising RTS games, and some might even be good, but I think the market for them are shrinking, so it's becoming less profitable.

I'm not waiting for WC4, I don't expect it to be created (please let me jinx myself). But if it is, It'll be great, of course:cool:

Honestly I think mobas are shit.

As for real rts games, I think they will make a comeback again. Seems first the crpg games have made a comeback.
They slowly releasing rts games(whether its hd remastering) or a new ip. Grey goo is one of those games.

Yeah - don't think it's dying but definitely getting more niche.

Starcraft still seems to be doing OK though with its e-Sport angle and the Sid-Meiers seem to be doing fine as well.

I think that at the moment the market is merely going through a phase, we may not see many RTS games at the moment but I am sure they will make a comeback in the future.

I for one hope it regains momentum. I would love to sink my teeth into a good RTS again.

I would give my left (insert something with a similar value to my testicle) for Warcraft 4... but I do think blizzard are done with warcraft as a RTS... Agr of Empires however... I think we will see something epic from them... when I started gaming it was 100% RTS... warcraft, age of empires, dark reign... wow those were the days...

I don't know if you guys know about these, but here are two I've been keeping an eye on. Not Warcraft 4, but they may pass a few hours.

Act of War

Really didn't like act of war. I still own the game on disk but didn't appeal to me.

When westwood shut down thats when the rts genre started dying in my opinion.

What didn't you like about AOW? I don't know much about it, so just curious.

I must say, even though I loved the skirmish modes in the later c&c titles, (EA) I thought the single player campaigns were terrible.

Felt clunky. Balance was bad,run like garbage. Felt like a budget title.

I thought kanes wraith campaign was good. Didn't enjoy ra 3, and generals strength was the skirmishes and mp. Also zero hours general mode was awesome.

I don't think it's dying. Just evolving.

I like the whole RTS model -> start out with a worker unit and build up to a massive army while your opponent does the same. But there's not much you can do with the model. You can change the look of the units and the attack and health and all, but like MOBA's and MMO's there isn't enough you can do to keep it going for 20+ years (it's been that long since Warcraft and AOE and CnC started appearing).

The Strategy genre is alive and doing well, but one needs to be a bit more flexible about what's included. Traditional RTS games will always be there but it'll be for a more niche crowd. On the other hand, we'll get more games like CoH, Total War types, RTWP, and whole new types I haven't even considered :)

I used to really enjoy the RTS games back in my PC gaming days, I played a lot of the C&C series, Startcraft, Dune, etc.

One of the last C&C games I played was C&C 4: Tiberian Twilight, which I found really disappointing because they took out a lot of what the RTS games are really about, ie. Building bases and armies. Seemed like they were dumbing it down.

I've just reinstalled the Warhammer: Dawn of War and DoW 2 series. There's been a few sales of them around lately. I'd really recommend them if you like RTS. DoW 2 moves from a more traditional RTS to a somewhat RTRPG format - a bit like Warcraft 3. Not to mention - co-op campaigns!

ya they killed C&C with that one. ruined a great gaming franchise

Red Alert 3 killed it for me. I absolutely hated the allies on the single player mode. I like to build up a massive force and then storm the enemies base, but what I found is that the AI allies would attack right away, so by the time I had built up my forces, they had pretty much destroyed the enemy, so all that was left to do was ride through taking out a barracks, perhaps three troops and whatever else was left. I think they wanted you to attack constantly, but I don't enjoy playing like that.
