Are you planning to upgrade to Windows 10?

what was it doing and what error?

No error. If you want a complete breakdown of what I tried to get it to say anything other than - "Your copy is reserved, we will let you know when you can update" then here you go. All of these with a few minutes gap between them to see if that %BT Windows folder pops up (it DID once i did ISO) and to make sure i gave it time to do it

Click Check for updates

run wuauclt.exe /updatenow from CMD

run wuauclt.exe /updatenow from CMD as admin

Click Check for updates and then run wuauclt.exe /updatenow from CMD

Click Check for updates and then run wuauclt.exe /updatenow from CMD as admin

Wipe C:\Windows\SoftwareDistrubition\Downloads contents

Click Check for updates and then run wuauclt.exe /updatenow from CMD

Wipe C:\Windows\SoftwareDistrubition\Downloads contents and then Click Check for updates and then run wuauclt.exe /updatenow from CMD as admin

restart

Wipe C:\Windows\SoftwareDistrubition\Downloads contents and then Click Check for updates and then run wuauclt.exe /updatenow from CMD as admin

All of those still ended with Check for updates saying it'll let me know when I'm allowed to upgrade. I WILL also point out, i was rather late to "reserving" my copy on my gaming pc, as I went and bought win 8 Pro (was running pirated before) before reserving it.

So yeah, it didn't work for everyone :p

Tons of things. I develop in Java, C#, Oracle, MySQL and SQL Server every day. When idling my PC eats up 4GB RAM. I often max out 8GB memory usage when I'm at full swing.

...then of course I have Battle.net, Steam and Origin on it as well, and the usual Office products and graphic design apps.

During the "preparing" phase, there IS a point where installs drivers and features. Mine only had Razer synapse, but I DID notice it downloaded it from the net...so its quite possible yours was limited to your inet speed during that time and wasnt actually taking long to install the OS.

Quite odd then as I reserved plenty of times and downloaded it the same day :D

Aren't you afraid to upgrade your dev hardware?

Well, the 3GB ISO files downloaded in half an hour, so... I have a 10Mbps fibre line at home which is usually quite fast.

On topic: calc.exe!!!!!!!!11!11!!!2

Like I say use the command trick to force the Windows 10 update.

How to use:
You open windows update first and as it is searching for updates you type this below in the command prompt and press enter and it should force the download, it might take a few times if you not fully updated.

You have to have automatic updates enabled also
Code:
wuauclt.exe /updatenow

To add to that. The above trick forces the download. Some people like me get and "Preparing to Install" message in Windows Updates and then a Error 80240020. This is not an error as such, simply means you have not been "approved" for the upgrade yet and need to wait. Post on Microsoft Support to bypass the wait.

Windows Update Installation Failure 80240020

Please note that there is no problem with your reservation or upgrade download. The upgrade download is not corrupt as some have stated, and you will be notified in the coming days or weeks when your device is ready to upgrade.

If you are very eager to upgrade, tech savvy users with the above message can modify the following registry key to install immediately.

Warning: Serious problems might occur if you modify the registry incorrectly. Before you modify it, back up the registry for restoration in case problems occur.

Locate the registry key: [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\WindowsUpdate\OSUpgrade]

It should exist, but if not, create it.

Create a new DWORD (32-bit) Value with Name = "AllowOSUpgrade” (without the quotes), and set the Value = 0x00000001.

Once the registry key is modified, close and reopen the desktop Control Panel, go to Windows Update and check for updates. You should now be able to click the Get Started button to upgrade to Windows 10. Note: Windows 8.1 users must go to the desktop Control Panel, and not the modern Windows Update UI.”

I'm very happy to say that I've now got a working ISO. Will do my Win 10 installation either tonight or tomorrow.

My update downloaded in minutes (100 Meg fibre) and the install took under 20 minutes (Intel 520 Series SSD).

The whole upgrade experience was great, no issues except for a TAP driver for Virtualbox which did not work. Reinstalling VirtualBox fixed that though. So far, Windows 10 is very good!!!

We don't like your kind around here. :p

Holy cow, freaken 100 Meg fibre. I'm very jealous indeed.

Busy upgrading my old laptop from Windows Vista Business to Windows 8.1 so I can upgrade it to Windows 10 so hope it goes as smooth as the others have :D.

Lucky I have a Windows 8.1 key.

Edit: Downloading via window updates now on my old laptop no problems at all again :D.

The deed is done....so much for waiting...

Used the ISO, took met less than an hour from starting to typing this. Now to see how it works...

For future use, when I want to reinstall Windows 10, can I simply use the new Windows 10 key I have now?

My update keeps on failing if I try the Windows Update method

you have to finish the current windows 8.1 updates that u have in order for update to go smoothly otherwise upgrade using an iso

I have done all the available updates.

When mine did that it actually was already downloaded and I just had to start the process of the upgrade.

How would I go about starting it? I'm pretty sure it is already downloaded.

If you got the folder and everything in C drive you have to force it in windows update somehow can't remember exactly how I did it, but it was somewhere in the view update history.

Wish I took note of it.
