Mygaming low on content

MyGaming misses Azimuth. She was controversial and she writes exceptionally well. Her articles were some of the best here at MyGaming. Unfortunately she's over at IGN Africa these days.

I just don't think that MyGaming is a money maker and with that they probably aren't finding it worthwhile paying people to write for the site. Which sucks but what can you do?

Who is/was Azimuth? The only female writer I recall reading here was Tarryn, and her articles were great! She did some for NAG as well, which were also very good.

In general, the SA scene doesn't really have anything going for it any more. It's all just regurgitated content from other sites as far as I can see. And when we do get an opinion piece, it's usually clickbait nonsense from a "guest writer", who obviously doesn't know anything about the subject matter. Honestly, with the site and forums being so dead, I expect the MyGaming forums to be incorporated completely into MyBroadband next year. which isn't really a good thing. MyBB isn't exactly the most objective news site. They do paid promotions for Openweb, where the comments on the article are disabled. That in my opinion makes them lose all creditability, those Openweb guy's are scoundrels.

Yep Azimuth is Tarryn.

And please don't let MyGaming be incorporated into MyBroadband. I swear I will try and buy MyGaming before that happens.

I think allowing user created articles could be awesome, provided they are vetted by the Mygaming staff / editors. I think we generally have a mature enough community here to not submit stupid articles etc.

Even if they're not "front page" worthy its more content to read, and the really good articles / news could be selected for the front page.

I'll be honest, the content is lacking. But even more honest? I get 90% of my gaming news from here, just because I don't have time to scour other gaming sites for news. The tidbits of info and news I get on here keep me in the gaming loop.

I get mine from here and Rock Paper Shotgun. Oh wait, I also have Lazygamer via RSS. I think I'm mostly up to date because of Dohc-WP though since I'm mostly on the forums and he posts the news.

I get mine from here and the Polygon Minimap podcast. Between them, I kinda feel like I'm covered with the most important news. But, I'd love to see more original content on MyG, we're having a drought!

Hehe, kinda funny that I got flamed for saying this in the past, and now it seems like most of the community agrees. :p

I think the last time I seriously used MyGaming as a news site was back in 2012. Nowadays I don't even look at the news section and just hang out in the forums. Forgive me saying, but it often feels like the only news that gets covered is click-baity stuff ("here's a list of 5 games that X" or one paragraph news snippits that can be written in a lunch break, etc). Even NAG Online has had better news coverage over the last three years, which is saying a lot considering they were never focused on their online platform so much as their magazine. What MyGaming really needs is a journalist dedicated to cranking out content for MyGaming full-time. Get someone to write in-depth news articles, previews, etc. Let the community maybe do reviews to make it easier to cover all the games. There's no reason why MyGaming can't do really well, but at the moment it feels a little like it's become a forgotten side-project that is only being kept alive for the sake of the dwindling community.

I'll continue to post here because I like the community, but it would be nice if the news side of MyGaming sees a revival.

Edit: Another thought to throw out there might be that maybe the people currently working on the site are just not such big gamers? It might explain why so often big events and news (like Blizzcon) don't get covered, simply because the journalists aren't as interested in it?

Kinda wonder how active this forum would be in general without the "Threadkiller" thread.

One of the things that irritates me, I'm mostly here for the game topics and talks and I hardly ever take part in TK, yet it's the most active thread. Sure I've made a lot of friends and what not and I wouldn't do without it as it does have it's place. But it seems like the forums have become more of a social space, which again, I'm all for as it has created this community. But we need more GAME RELATED TALK, after all... this is a gaming related site.

Yep it irks me as well. Between game releases there are no real activity on the rest of the forum. I'm sure a MyG IRC channel would be better suited for the kind of socializing happening in the TK thread. It would also force people to take part in other parts of the forum especially during activity competitions.

It's a vicious cycle:

Without people, there is no community content that is created, which means there is no discussion on game related topics, which means less views. But, without content being created for the main site, people aren't drawn into the site or the forum, which means less community content is created.

The main MyGaming site is the foundation upon which this whole site should be built on. At the moment there just isn't any content being created to draw in more and new people. This is why it's down to regulars to keep pumping content on the forum, and almost 80% of all regulars post in TK regularly as well, making it by far the most active thread.

What also irks me, while we're on the topic. The only content that seems to get published to the site and then propagated to the forums is by the aliases of users called gr33nFIEND and RazorGene - these users have absolutely no online presence or personality, they may as well be bots for all we know, who just seem to churn out content/articles to keep the clock ticking so to speak.

Once in a while there will be a half decent review, but often these articles which actually give MyGaming their own created content and originality, seem to be by people who are just tasked to do so (filler content). Do they even play the games they review?

We need content by creators who are actually interested in the market and games!

We are probably a bit hard on MyGaming. If the site isn't making money, even during the time when it was at its busiest then they most likely won't put in the effort to add all the content that we the community want. They have to go where the money is. However, if MyGaming is doing well then I agree completely. Content is sparse. Maybe for a reason.

It's probably not up to Jan to comment on this or he would have already.

I do know that I love this place and it's my internet home. So whatever is best for MyGaming is what I want.

These kind of posts always make me chuckle ...... any forum that has a TK has people 'against' it and I can never ever figure out why. This place is on the last blip of a life support machine, kill the one place where regulars chat to each other and it's done. Focus on what is missing instead of stupid quips about a thread and you may breathe life back in this place.

Ugh, wtf happened to MyGaming ......

Im mostly on here and on pc gamer and wowjuju and curse thise are the sites i visit most. And i think a few of the regulars here most of the time post worth while content if it does not come from the mygaming staff. And its a community site after all so why not get a bit more creative from our own side. I know most of us work and dont always have time but if you come across something worth while that you will think peaks an interest to other members post it.

Just font go posting your fav porn sites juicy storybof the week pls :p

Money aside, I don't think that's the real issue at play here. Let the powers at play remain there and they would reap the rewards.

Take some select upstanding individuals from the community to freelance and handle some selected aspects, columns, reviews, opinions, news, etc. - 90% of the time people involved in the community will be all too happy to assist in the creation of the community and help evolve and grow it without even thinking about being paid. So there you have quality content at no cost to the managers/directors. Get others involved like eAe gaming to aid in YouTube channel. I have already seen some very well worded content, posts and threads from some people, and in all honesty, people interested in these type of site have a common interest in games. We aren't looking to read through articles with big confusing words and clever word play. They just want coherent articles with substance, originality and decent grammar.

Point and case, I've just seen this and frankly this pisses me off. Article just posted to MyGaming on Fallout 4 review round up - now compare that the similair one found over here at MenStuff titled, Is Fallout 4 Worthy of the Hype?

Exactly the same article, word for word. I understand if the MyG was sponsored by MenStuff but for goodness sake, this is just duplicating content and creating filler.

Not only that but it's also a day later than the competition. The reviews came out 24 hours ago and since then I've read the roundups on Lazygamer. It was clearly indicated what time the reviews would come out so being a day late and basically having the same content as another site is just lazy :/ I don't think they care anymore.

I'm not sure if this has been said before, but I'm fairly sure that MyGaming is a labour of love for some of the writers at MyBroadband. It's likely that they have certain responsibilities at MyBroadband and are expected to work on the MyGaming content between those responsibilities or in their own time.

Managing community content is not a simple task. It would require that every article is properly proofed (which takes time more time than you realise), and then every article should meet some minimum measure of quality. I know writing looks easy because we can all form (mostly) intelligible sentences, but constructing a coherent, well-structured article is not something that everyone can do. To make an article entertaining or something that everyone wants to read is even more difficult and requires real talent.

Though introducing community content is a nice idea, I don't believe that it will reduce the workload or the ability to push out more content of the writers and editor at MyGaming if time constraints are the problem. There needs to be a market so that it is feasible to devote more resources to writing more articles. If MyBroadband's management don't believe that we are a market worth catering for, then there isn't much more that can be done I'm afraid.
