Thread of PC Woes, Troubles, Problems, and Issues

ok so I kinda have an idea of what the problem is but there's no harm in getting more opinions :)

So I got a "new" GPU. A Radeon HD 7870 XT.

I put it in and nothing happens. Monitor does not get a signal from the card

I updated the mobo bios and more stuff broke. Like now windows won't recognise my wifi dongle so I lost the internet as well now. and it takes forever to boot up now. but that's a separate issue. my main problem is the GPU

Any thoughts?

Boot into "I broke something" mode aka Safe Mode, go to device manager. Click on View -> Show hidden devices

Expand "Display Adapters", right click on every item under Display Adapters and click uninstall. Then install the proper drivers for the Radeon and reboot the system.

If that doesnt work, please check the manufacturer (e.g. Sapphire) website for a Graphics Card BIOS update, download this and install it. Reboot and try again.

YDI for using AMD though, but I'll still help you

but the problem is there is no display from the start. surely it can't be a driver problem then

Stupid questions, but just to eliminate some possibilities. What input are you using, what screen, are you using a cable that you know works? Does the Gpus fans turn on when you turn on the PC?

Could still be...else the card could just be dead, or made by AMD, or your monitor is screwed, or the cable is buggered, or the slot on the MB died, or or or...let's start with the simple stuff and work from there

DVI

everything works fine if I put the 560 back in.

Yes the Radeon's fan start spinning

Well it turns out there is another role within the company (not a position), and they have asked me if I would be interested in it; a UX Designer?

PsychoFish FarligOpptreden - What on earth is this and is it a step forward or in the right direction?

User Experience Designer

Basically a graphic designer for software/web/mobile interfaces. UI layouts and look and feel and such. and making it user friendly

So... a move forward then?

I guess it will at least get me out of the mundane data/price/backend testing.

Opinions?

Opinions?

do you have a graphic designing background and experience?

Honestly, based purely on the fact that you didn't even know what UX Design was, I'd say this is not for you.

I'm a designer and I'm not even comfortable applying for a UX job cause I don't have enough experience for it

Well considering they're asking me tells me there's no one else suited for it in the company. And if it gets me out of "data capturer" then I'm kinda for it. I'm also sure they'll consider some form of training or course if it will help them.

well then by all means go for it.

But I suggest you study THIS first

And if they are willing to pay for training then THIS is a good option

Sorry, i'm on course this week so I'm a bit slow with checking things. It would be a step up, kinda...but do you really want to do that?

Thanks, I think I may as well attempt it. I've always kinda had an interest in graphic and web design and dabbled as a hobby, so I'll try eh. No harm no foul, and can only look better on a CV.

But again, just a pity it will be an added role and not a position, so probably won't come with a pay rise. Just more responsibilities.

Hmm, why don't you look into more sysadmin type positions and/training?

That will again just be another role. I've just had my increase end of January, the whole 2% worth. We've been told "everybody has multiple roles". And frankly the other okes in IT are pricks and primary reason I moved out of IT and into testing, though I still function as an IT guy but as a secondary role.

I'll keep an ear on the ground for you anyways.
