New GPU Assistance

Okay guys and girls, the time has come. I need a new GPU. And I know that there has been a few of these threads in the past, but I don't want to hijack them for my own gains.

So here is my needs: As I've been a console gamer almost my whole life, solid FPS is the least of my concern. If I game at 60 or 30 I could not care less. But I'd like to play at 1080 with settings on high or higher. Not too extreme, as I know what my budgetary constraint are and that I'd probably not get the full 1080 ultra experience with my budget

Speaking of which, the budget is tight. I can really only see myself spend up to R3500 on a new GPU. Crazy I know, and probably a stretch too far for my needs, but at least it will be better than I have right now. Plus anything in that range would give me a better experience in No Man's Sky

So, my options that I've found has been:
AMD RX 460
AMD R7 370
Nvidia GTX 950
Nvidia GTX 750 TI

Not a lot of options I feel, and I'm really leaning towards the RX 460 seeing as it's the latest and cheapest and seem to be the more powerful of these cards. Have I missed some options? What would you guys and girls say?

AMD RX 460, hands down.

Out of those cards I'd have to recommend the Radeon RX 460, doesn't matter if its 2GB or 4GB for most 1080p gaming so go with whatever is cheaper.

The newer generation of GPUs (Pascal/Polaris) have seen a decent leap in performance so it would be almost irresponsible not to grab one of them :)

If you decide to spend a bit more, the GeForce GTX 1060 is probably the best choice.

As I told Jan last night, my brain says the newer cards will have better performance, but I'm probably over analyzing things and looking at too much performance charts, and those show older cards beating the pants off of the RX 460. Naturally, I know this is probably not a future proof purchase, and I'm okay with that. It's the limitations of my budget. Which is why I don't know why I am so reluctant to just go out and buy the damn thing. It should be the perfect card for me, yet my prudent side keeps on telling me do more research. Maybe I should just bite the bullet and do it

My big thing is, all the new lower end budget cards are so cheap compared to the older Mid/higher tier cards. So it really is not worth it to get an old gen card anymore imo

Agree 100%. If you are not planning to SLI. And want a card that is going to last very long and still perform like a beast on a slight budget, then 1060

It is a difficult decision to make, but using process of elimination on your list of potential, I would rule out both the R7 370 and the GTX 750Ti because they generally don't measure up to the RX 460 in terms of performance in newer games.

The GeForce GTX 950 and the RX 460 are fierce competitors and their performance is basically equal, but I would choose the RX 460 for two reasons - 1. Lower power usage than the GTX 950 and 2. The RX 460's newer architecture and asynchronous compute support means that it will see improved performance in DirectX12 and Vulkan games, whil Maxwell cards like the GTX 950 do not fully support asynchronous compute.

Basically, when performance is almost equal, newer is better :D

So just to clarify why I'm excluding the Nvidia GTX 950 & Nvidia GTX 750 TI

The GTX 950 is an entry level card in the GeForce 900 series. It's not a bad card, it's not the fastest card either. It will do an admirable job or running most things at a decent speed, just don't expect miracles at 1080p.

GTX 750 TI, admirable card. I replaced my 750 with a GTX 980 and boy was it an upgrade of note. Anyway, the 750 is getting a bit long in the tooth and is struggling on the newer titles that have come out. It's slightly noticeable on Tomb Raider and very noticeable on Rise of the Tomb Raider. The situation is only going to get worse as the years tick by.

Your best bet is to buy the latest generation of cards, so it'll have to be an AMD RX 4xx or nVidia GTX 10xx unless you feel like getting a new card in the next 2-3 years again.

Might be worth taking a gander over at carbonite as well for a reputable seller if you don't mind secondhand, some of the GPU's are nto that old and have been well taken care off others not

If you are willing to go up to around R3500, I think you may be able to do better than the RX 460, which only retails for R2000 or so. From personal experience, rather spend a little bit more now for something that will last you longer. For instance:

http://www.wootware.co.za/powercolo...it-gddr5-pci-e-3-0-desktop-graphics-card.html

It's R500 over your budget, but has literally double the horsepower of the 460, and will likely play anything at 1080p will all the bells and whistles turned on. This is a good read as well. http://mygaming.co.za/news/pc/10082...-rx-460-price-and-performance-comparison.html

Consider carefully rather than spend money but be disappointed with the results.

DieGrootHammer does that mean you aren't considering a second hand GTX960 anymore?

Seems like the prevailing opinion of the masses, and I think its becoming mine as well.

I wouldn't be against the idea of a second hand card, though I'm not too familiar with Carbonite, and I tried registering with them to get a second hand card but haven't heard from the mods yet. Still not active there

I think you are encapsulating my hesitance. This thought is why I haven't gone out and bought the RX 460 yet, even though it does fit my requirements well. I am reluctant to spend R4k on a card, but it would be a much better buy for me. At that point I have to also consider that the rest of my rig would have some bottlenecking, and would negate the extra spent on the faster card.

DieGrootHammer does that mean you aren't considering a second hand GTX960 anymore?

It's still an option, but Carbonite hasn't given me access to their site for me to get in contact with the seller, and yeah there is always the risk you run buyinh from some stranger on the internet. I lucked out in trusting The Joker when I bought my PC way back when, but yeah there must be a reason why that guy's rating is on the low side...

Might be time to upgrade. Are you overclocking?

No, no overclocking.

You see, I've never really had an issue as I've always been able to play the new games on Xbox One, and any other older games om PC. It's always worked for me well. But, NMS is my latest addiction, so it's prompted me to have a gander at upgrading.

Well, IMHO a quick fix would be to get a better/faster GPU and a nice aftermarket cooler for that 2500 and overclock it a notch.

You're very much in the "mid to low range" band from a CPU perspective.

Carbonite is a great place to go look if you are on a budget. The admins are anal these days, trying to keep out scammers. So accounts have been limited. So getting a mediator might have to be an option.
Some people sell off hardware with warranty still left and so on

Just as a quick example. Didn't really search.

Yeah that's pretty much why I thought about upgrading and getting a GPU. A quick fix. I know my place in the MasterRace, and I know I'm sitting at the bottom of the totem pole. I'd just like to be able to play newer games without my PC crying.

I'll see if I can get into Carbonite, but yeah emailed them again this morning, with no response.

So as the day draws to a close it seems that I'd be doing alright in picking up the RX 460, although I'd still be squarely in the bottom tear of PC gaming. At least I'll be able to play the game I want on my PC at a reasonable frame rate and reasonable quality. For everything else there's still the Xbox One, which will remain my primary gaming platform

The huge problem will still be that you will have 0 itraders. That is your rating. And 0 to no people will do deals involving big amounts of money with people that have 0 itraders. All to keep scammers away
