Is it still worth it to upgrade your PC

About 2 years back, I bought myself a TOP OF THE RANGE compo, and paid well over R16000 for it. Now, 2 years later, I struggle playing the new games that come out. And selling it is not an option, as I will get next to nothing for it.

So I keep on thinking... WHY DIDN'T I BUY MYSELF A CONSOLE!!! What do you guys think?

Eeeek. I'm still running a core2duo at 4.2GHz and it's kicking the snot out of most quad-core systems even now! I would like a shiny new i7 though :)

Wow, thats a tough one.
Lets put it this way.

The games you've bought over 2 years have been cheaper. The money saved per game (As opposed to teh XBox/PS3 equiv) shuold be totalled and that's your spend on a GFX card upgrade on teh current PC.

R600/new release as opposed to R300/ new release (Console vs PC).
10 games = R3000

Thats a pretty hardcore GFX card upgrade.

If you havent bought 10 games in 2 years, then the console was the way to go? to late now . . . Buy a new GFX card and you'll get another 2 years of gaming.

Also...judging by the way PC gamers are being shafted by developers, I'd say it's a safer bet to buy a console dude. Get a PS3...then you'll have a Blu-ray player as well.

No it's not, 2yrs ago if u paid R16 000 for a comp it would def last till to this day. Otherwise u got seriously ripped off.

And u seem to forget, yes its nice to pay R4k for a Ps3. but the games cost R800 each. 10 of those and ur back to where u were with ur pc. And u need a decent flat screen to enjoy it properly.

I was always a Intel man, but thought i'd take the leap to AMD, only to find out what AMD stands for... (Another Major Disaster!)

Sorry that sentenced sounded too harce.
A I see but you should know amd is for us gamers on a budged :p
My amd lasted 6 years before I needed to upgrade it again could always play games on medium/high settings. There where a few exceptions that just don't want to run on even low settings.
I just went intel and guess what I can't install 4 gig ram rofl.
Okay so tell us your specs lets see, if you got lots of free time stay with a pc if you don't totally get a console.

Yes well I agree that I still can play games on it, just not with all effect turned on full, and as for consoles, you don't have to tweak your settings in order to get the game to run smoothly on the highest settings. I'm just implying that for gaming, and if that is all that you use the PC for, that console is the better way to go.

I paid about R6000 rand for me new upgrade and I can run anything and every thing on full settings with no lag. My specs I upgraded

Asus motherboard(don't remember the model name)
Radoen hd 4800
Amd quad-core phenom 2.61 9950
4gigs of kingston ram

And it runs like a dream

Well, let's just say that you know better now.

I prefer to build/upgrade my machine myself rather than have some shop do it for me.

*too*

I don't think I'd ever get sick of upgrading my PC. It just feels like it's "mine" and that I chose what went into it, what it looks like and how it performs, according to my needs. It's just a much more "personal" experience.

I think a lot of hype is put on the "latest" processor and the "latest" GPU, but most of that is overkill - you really just need to learn and decide for yourself what is most important to you and go from there.

Personally, I like getting the barebone things down and just upgrading what needs to be upgraded when it's convenient.

I love my PC lots!

...and to answer the question you posed in your thread's title,
whether you might consider upgrading worthwhile depends on
your needs and expectations of a spruced-up computer system.

:)
