Has anyone watched/bought movies or series on Steam?

It's tucked away fairly unobtrusively but Steam has quite a catalogue of free and paid movies and series available on it. There's not really any mainstrean stuff but some of it looks quite interesting.

The short films from Oats Studios look quite good. I haven't had a chance to check them out yet but the Steam reviews are very positive.

E.g.
9/10
"Take my money!!!"
Just watch those awesome free short movies. The only downside is that you'd love to watch a full movie of each gem immediately!

Rakka: 9.5/10
Sci-Fi shortfilm about earth's future.
Firebase: 9.5/10
Mystery/Sci-Fi shortfilm set in the Vietnam war.
Zygote: 8.5/10
Horror/Sci-Fi shortfilm set in an arctic mine.
God: 8/10
"Realitiy-Tv" shortfilm about god.
Cooking with Bill: 7.5/10
'80s teleshopping parody mini serires.

Cons:
- "none"
=> You definitely want to watch more!

Verdict:
Must watch!

I'll post my thoughts on this thread once I've had a chance to watch some of the films, I'll probably start with Rakka.

Has anyone else checked out any of the films/series on Steam?

I remember logging into Steam last year on May, 1[SUP]st[/SUP] and being greeted with this image:

Lionsgate Announcement

I thought it was interesting at the time but also felt that it didn't appeal to me because I don't like streaming movies and Steam's terrible video player didn't help to pique my interest either.

I only found out that movies were available on Steam during the Summer Sale. One of the tasks to get those sticker packs were to check out the movie section, which caught me off guard completely. I also didn't know that Blomkamp's videos are on Steam. I'll definitely check it out. Have heard only good things of these movies.

How is the quality of streaming? Can you play movies in Big Picture mode and project that onto a TV, for instance?

I think when they kicked off the movie thing they didn't have very interesting movies.

I was also looking at Rakka the other day ironically enough.

I'm actually surprised that they haven't capitalised more on the captive audience that they have in regards to movies and music.

Playing the movie opens up a separate window called "Steam Video Player" which has a few options where you can select the quality level - 1080p recommends a 5Mbps line (I have 20Mbps). It seemed to Stream fine with no buffering lag, even skipping ahead it took a few seconds and continued playing. Definitely a lot better than the video player for the games on the store pages, those get stuck buffering all the time when I try to play them fullscreen.

I thought the videos on the games page were basically links to youtube videos.

They are hosted on Steam so if you lose your account, you lose them too. Quality is fairly decent, akin to CR/Hulu/Netflix at 480/720p but requires more bandwidth.
