[MyGame] Deus Ex: Human Revolution

Also in the police station area, although I ran around picking up all available sidequests, most of which involve the police station.

Are you meant to get some kind of mission debrief? Since I've been skippin all cutscenes (this will be my 4th attempt at playing this game, furthest I got was the gang infiltration before getting over it), I may have missed it. But I was never presented with a screen telling me i ghosted this, or set off X amount of alarms...Are they part of the cutscenes?

nope no debrief, just quest complete notifications.
I advise to not skip cut scenes, the voice acting is amazing.

So I've just stopped playing for the night. I beat the first boss fight, Barret. Pro tip, stock up on mines. Moved on to my favourite part of the game, Hengsha. I love the area and all the real world stuff to talk about. I'll craft full proper replies with some screenshots tomorrow.

I've noticed I don't look at the map almost at all. I've played this game so much that I actually play off of memory. Trying to find all the side missions in Hengsha. I believe I know where they all are, but I wonder if there isn't one that I've missed.

Also, I'm so glad to see more people getting into the game. Its a wonderful experience.

Not commiting to it 100% yet - will see if I can do it, currently my mental state makes me not right for this type of gameplay - need instant gratification

I'm adding you to the list but don't feel pressured into participating. :)

Playing the first "mission" I remembered why I always eventually stop playing this game. I think I'm too "efficient" in the way I play stealth games. I take out guards in a room, THEN I explore. Deus Ex is the only stealth game I've ever encountered that actively punishes you (at the start at least, before you have enough Praxis points to counter it) for being able to quickly takedown and hide bodies.

I sit there and wait for my stupid "energy" bar to fill up...because while i can move boxes and fridges without hassle, apparently punching 1 guy makes me breathless and I can't do it again for like 2 minutes.

shittiest...design...ever

So, there are two things I want to address. two things that have been apparent playing the first few hours of the game.

The first is the tension between augmented people and the "pure breeds". This tension is very similar to racial tensions seen in the real world, and I would guess the writers took a lot of real world situations to create a very believable scenario. It is interesting to note that in a country like America, where racial tension is quite high, the simulation of augmentation tension is also very apparent. The augmented people of Detroit don't dwell near well-lit areas. They are all situated in the alleys, in poorer areas, and via the delivery of some side missions, it's clear that augmented people have a very harsh life if they are not part of the wealthy upper class. Funny enough, in Hengsha, China, the tension between augmented people and normal people are not based on socio-economic factors, but more a divide between the legal and illegal side of the society. It's very fitting taking into account that this is supposed to play off in China.

What I've found to be fascinating is the fact that the designers and writers have actively spent the time to create this cultural divide between how augments are handled in Detroit versus Hengsha. Both scenarios play off just as you would expect them to be based on current real world trends. Very cool, the small little detail I like.

Now, onto Hengsha. and more importantly, the Alice Garden Pods

/minor spoilers potentially so I'll put them in the tags.

Spoiler: show

This is a screenshot of the Alice Garden Pods:

View attachment 24776

This tiny little cabin is the only area that the people living here get for themselves. This tiny little pod is their home, their only place of privacy. In the building there are washing rooms, bathrooms, relaxing areas with tables and stuff, there are food stalls, and cleaning services. All the things needed for these people to live here. And these Pod style hotels exist in the real world. While they are more aimed at the adventurous traveller, these make a lot of sense for combating over population and lack of space

With Hengsha effectively growing so rapidly that they actually built a city on top of a city in the game, it is no wonder that space for all the massive amount of people would be scarce. It makes perfect sense then that these pod style living areas would become popular, especially amongst those that cannot afford the high prices of apartments. Listen to the conversations of many NPCs in Hengsha, they all complain about the skyrocketing prices of property. These pods are their only option, and while the idea is sound, the thought of people living in such close proximity of each other is scary. But let's be honest, with what is happening in the real world, this might be a very real future we will inevitably face one day...

Deus Ex truly is one of the most believable and best dystopian futures in gaming. It's gritty and uncomfortable in some cases but grounded in very real problems.

So I actually managed to talk my way into the Police Station yesterday. Never managed that on the first play through.

Also the divide in this instance seems to be grounded in a fear of the augmented because now some of them have secret super human abilities. For example: a person with the right upgrades can punch through walls and your skull.
It also seems to me that there is a higher power adding fuel to the animosity toward the augmented.

To be honest, I would be scared of a dude with a robot arm myself.

I killed Barret earlier today and finished everything else in Detroit, so I'm ready to go to Hengsha. I've played about 9 hours so far.

Barret is dead. Lol, he chucked two grenades that rebounded onto him helping me kill him.

Spoke will Bill Taggert, he seems suspicious to me.

I'm now in Hengsha.

Done with Hengsha and TYM. Unfortunately while skulking around TYM, it seems one guard I knocked out saw me for a split second before I punched him in the face. It meant that I didn't ghost the mission, which means I won't get the achievement! Dammit, but I'm now too invested into the game to go back and try again. I will have a second playthrough of the game probably during these two months, so I'll give it another go.

Oh, and you guys trying to not kill people and be all stealthy, good bloody luck at TYM, especially the last parts.

One screen shot showing off the pretty Upper Hensha seen from TYM:

I've not gotten to Montreal, an area I usually powered through, so I'm not too familiar with this area. Honestly, it's not my favourite part of the game.

But there are two little easter eggs that I want to share. One a HUGE SPOILER and the other just a really awesome email.

Spoiler: show
You need to meet Eliza Cassan in room 404, which is funny, because that's the error code for Page Not Found. One can almost say this is foreshadowing Person Not Found...

Then the email:

I'm staring at the MCB gang in detroit. And I wanna know, if I walk up to someone and they are "alarmed", and do a knockout. It never seems to switch to "hostile", but I'm wondering if this would effect the ghost achievement. as they CLEARLY saw me coming. I can't find answers on google, and i'd rather just not do the mission than risk borking it up this early (its a side quest so you dont get the ghost popup regardless)
