The 4870 has to be the best bang for buck. Ati have seriously impressed me with their prices over the last year.

I was always a Nvidia fan, but my next card will without a doubt be either the 5850 or 5870.

Well the fact that its going for R1600 is amazing... i might actually consider grabbing it in december or end of Jan....

I have the 4870 512mb version it best investment ever except for 1 thing i need the extra 512 the 1gb version gives.

I'm looking to upgrade over the holidays but was thinking about getting the nVidia GTS250 512MB DDR3 since its going for R1600, but it means I'm going to have to get a larger power supply aswell.

Well here is my pc specs.

MSI G13 V2 - R400
Geforce9800GT - R1000 (2nd hand back in the day)
Gigabyte odin 585w - R700ish
Ram 2Gig (El chepo ram) - R300
Quad Core Q9400 - R1700

All in all got a pretty decent pc for R3700 :)

I purchased a GTS250 from who knows who of a company called Palit. Maybe they are well known but I certainly have not heard of them.

Either way I am pleased with the card because I guess I am hardly making use of it with the processor being a Pentium 4 under the bonnet.

I have never been an ATI type myself therefore me not yet (but almost) being in the upgrade season for my system I dontknow the ATI offering. I will say however the nVidia GeForce GTS250 can be picked up for a decent price.

The GTX240 was announced today, that should be a sub-R1500 card and performs at about roughly between the 9600 and 9800GT cards

The GTS250 is equivalent to the 9800GTX+ no?

I am almost certain I paid around R1 400 for my Palit GeForce GTS250.

Here is a link I randomly found for the card.

Once again I have no idea who Palit actually is, but my point of this post is to ask.. is it not better to get a GTS250. (versus the GTX240 of course)

Yip it is, and the 9800 is equivalent to the 8800GT, so basically you getting a 8800GT :D

Actually the GTS250 IS the die-shrunk equivalent of the 9800GTX+.

yeah. exactly that. I know the nVidia naming convention became a pain for some because it mislead into thinking it is an entire new range of card where meanwhile it was just built on the previous technology... not there is anything wrong with the previous technology but still strange way to name the cards.

Well screw the GTS250 worst card at the moment. The 4850 or even the 4770 is a better card. more bang for bucks. You can overclock the shit out of the 4770.
