Tonight was the night, New Moon. Not speaking about Monday nights moon phase here in Cape Town, but rather the Twilight version of New Moon. Finally the first screening since the posters were put up so many moons ago a vampire would only remember. Okay enough of the play on words, it could get lame... like Twilight? Lets see...
Firstly the mid-night release at V&A Waterfront was an interesting experience non-the less to add to my opinion of Twilight and its fans. A third of the ticket holders would be of course the fairer sex which as often as Jacob or Edward took off their shirts would shriek for the duration of that scene. I do not recall shrieking every time Megan Fox pulled a few moves in Jennifers Body. Gotta love Twilight fans.
The film would most likely please dedicated followers of the saga more so than random movie-goers like myself. I felt the start and mid section to be drawn out containing repetitive focus; attempting to recreate an emotional understanding for the viewer being limited by the ability the medium of film can offer.
The compliments box fills up quickly when mentioning the directing and cinematography, there were many breathtaking scenes depicting the landscape and surroundings in a way truly professional. So then we have great scene execution with some not so bad acting; that said Kristen Stewart (Bella) could improve her performing ability somewhat by easing up slightly, her appearance of constantly being in pain or suffering some sort of constipation is over emphasised. I am uncertain what Bella's personality traits are from the books, but I intuitively feel she is getting it slightly wrong bringing the persona to the big screen.
Key following points in watching Twilight was Bella's relationship with Jacob; understanding the situation he was placed in with Bella. A genuine scenario some guys would possibly be able to relate to. Bella openly admits her reason for wanting him around, a fact the same aforementioned "some guys" are not usually given notice of. Well done there to Taylor Lautner's acting ability to portray accurately his state of being. A negative viewing point would be Edward drifting away but staying present at the same time. Nausea presented itself along with Edward every scene he would popped to linger around as Bella is longing for him in her thoughts. I felt we got the message a long time ago.
One thing is for certain, the fans are there and the support is there, around the corner is most probably EA wanting to make a video game adaptation. Cult Twilight strengthens tonight. Eclipse next.
