Aion - General Discussion

There was a big update in December - about 90-odd MB - it depends though - are you installing from scratch or do you still have the client from last time you played?

Hah in fury I deleted it when my ADSL problems went to hell. So I guess it is about 700-800mb patching all together from release, which is pretty standard these days.

First I need to properly test this HSDPA connection before I go all out. Will do so with EVE Online for a few weeks, and if that goes well I will load up Aion, likely also with a tunneling service like Gamepath.

Hopefully once this whole 2010 soccer thing is over I can get Telkom to give a crap and go fix the ADSL in this area. I stay like 15mins from Town in JHB and I have never had any serious issue for years with my line until July last year. Got told by a few people that Telkom are not going to fix a lot of areas problems until they upgrade the systems in the areas some time in 2010. Oh well...

I'm playing on HSDPA - some lag, but it's quite playable. You're going to suffer a bit in PvP though.

I suppose it depends on coverage in your area.

Bleh the gaylos are REALLY starting to get gay now, busy questing a lvl 50 ranger flys above me one shots me dead, thinking ok.........

2nd time a lvl 50 Assasin hides and one shots me again ><

3rd time sorc does some bloody spell dont know what it was i see like 3 volcanos around me and poof dead again ><

I get the same thing on my side of the curtain.

A bunch of level 49/50 asmos think its great fun to hang around the low level areas in the Abyss pwning the Elyos who come to finish off quests. Fortunately I have a level 47 ranger who I can ask to hide in my general region - so it turns into a nasty surprise for them - I keep an eye out and shout whenever I see one coming - I can also see when a Sin or Ranger go into hiding somewhere nearby.

I suppose you're going to end up with immature farts no matter where you go.

My friend has a nasty tactic.

He parks his high level char (47 ranger) off in the area he plans to grind in. Then he logs off and logs in with his lower level alt and starts grinding. If and when he gets ganked - he logs out, logs into his main, and pwns the poor bastard who was up until then giggling evilly behind his keyboard.

As they say, he who laughs last ... :p

That's what we do in WoW as well...

However my one mate had a funny thing going...

We would quest with our lvl 10-15 characters and a lvl 60 hordie would gank the snot out of us. He would then log his lvl 70 (back when that was the cap), then kill the guy 1 shot and before the person releases his ghost (i.e. he's still watching his dead body) my mate would use the following emotes on the guy's corpse:

/hug
/no

Anyway, he relogs his lowbie and we carried on. When the same lvl 60 came within viewing distance of us, he would use the same " /hug , /no " emotes on him..and this guy would just belt it.

Was so funny seeing a lvl 10 gnome chase away a lvl 60 hordie with emotes. :D

The days of getting one-shotted are the days you look back on fondly years into the future. You don't actually realise how much entertainment it provides. Instead of simply questing you're running about on your tippy-toes trying to avoid high levels.

Which is what I tend to do a lot when I'm questing in the Abyss ;) A level 30 chanter doesn't have much of a chance on his own.

Aion complicates things though, because all you see is a rank, not level. And I generally tend not to hang around long enough to find out.

And rank isn't a good indication either, since you can spend your Abyss Points, thereby reducing your rank - I've been belted by a rank 8 before (I'm rank 7) - when I logged into Aiononline to check it turned out he was 6 levels above me. :(

Yeah - 1st time round you see someone with a skull next to their level in WoW you freak out thinking it's some real bad ass...

When you roll alts you try figure out what level he is by the gear he's wearing :p

I got so freaked out when i landed in the Elyos questing zone in Aion...everyone had a ?? on their level, which in WoW terms is 10 levels or more above you, in Aion it's just opposite faction, so I was running away the whole time. :o

Haha :D I can remember my first ?? sighting in WoW. It was in Loch Modan. They were only level 30's or something judging by the damage the guards were doing to them, but I still went running for the hills and ended up getting pew-pewed by Troggs :o

P.S. - To those still playing - how's the latency and gold spam these days compared to release?

FINALLY!!!!

MY PROBLEM SOLVED :p

It seems like a real good idea. Get all geared up, rift over to the enemies zone, then hunt and hide as you level up. So, what happens when you kill too many lower-level players? Take a look at the image to the right. You get marked on your enemies map so they can all find you to let you know what they think of you...

Here's your sign!

Gold-spamming is still an issue, and not one I think we'll ever get rid of entirely. It's too profitable. NCSoft are however taking an active approach - they tend to disappear every Wednesday after server maintenance only to pop up again a few hours later.

With regards to latency - the last 3 days aren't good to base things on due to the cable break on the SAT-3, that's been screwing everybody up. But overall, I have to say I haven't had as many latency issues - things still get a bit hicuppy in crowded areas, and fort raids are always good for a disconnect or two, but I honestly think the graphic engine plays a part in that. Honestly, the Crytek engine sucks when it comes to rendering a lot of movement - I always notice an improvement when I dial my graphics down a bit. Or completely.

Keep in mind I'm playing on a 3G connection - never the best to start with - I'd expect someone on a landline to do a bit better.

Thanks :)

Seems they've still got a few things they need to sort out. I thoroughly enjoyed my time playing it, but the familiarity mixed with the issues (and the fact that it ran TERRIBLY on my PC) lead to me losing interest in it quickly. There wasn't any incentive to keep playing it when I could hop into a more established game like WoW with similar features and far less trouble.

I see it's still hanging onto the top 10 in the Xfire rankings, which is good. Better than what I expected almost 5 months after release :)

I think anybody who started playing before, at or just after release would have dropped the game by now. So the population is pretty steady at the moment - and obviously there are none of the waiting times that plagued the first couple of weeks.

People are either going to love or hate the game - myself, no guarantees I'm going to hang around after GW2 hits the shelves, but it'll keep me busy and entertained for the next couple of months.

The only issue I have with this game that I didn't have with GW was the incessant amount of grinding you need to do to level.
