MWEB's R219 uncapped ADSL and gaming

Any of you guys actually using the 'Uncapped' feature to download a quite a bit of stuff? Wanna see how this pans out since i am keen on using news servers to pull a whole lot of stuff down..

I am, Speeds up late at night, but terribly slow for P2P during the day.

dumb question, but is it necessary to have a computer or laptop if I'm gonna use my PS3? Can I just have the console plugged into router?

Way off topic but...

No. Definitely not necessary. But if you'll be browsing the web on the PS3, get the wireless keyboard & trackpad PS3 device. Else you are likely to end up a suicide stat. ;)

So from what I gather, the account is shaped relatively heavily during the day, but is unshaped during what would be normally be the Express+ "let loose" hours of 7pm-8am.

Can anyone give an idea as to what international gaming latencies are like during the day? I'm trying to determine if the shaping during the day is less restrictive for gaming and tighter on downloads.

Also, with previous accounts I had with Mweb, 60-80ms was generally the latency I'd get to local servers, which is perfectly playable, however with Axxess accounts, I've always gotten lower latencies to local servers, in range of 30-50ms. Can anyone share more local latencies as well?

Sorry, just trying to lap up as much information as I can because this offer really seems too good to be true. It very promising at the moment and if no big red flags pop up, I'll be making a switch at the end of this month. The month to month contract as opposed to Mwebs old 12 month uncapped contracts is also a huge step forward for them.

I had the pleasure of testing the business offering for a couple of days on my 4MB line. I had no issues with speed throughout. My suggestion is this: if you gonna use it for gaming and p2p, then go with the business offering. 5 static IP's, notifications, unshaped bandwidth, cisco 877 router (this router is a beast). My exchange has been down for a couple of days now and everytime my line came back up I got an sms (even though it stayed up for like 5 seconds). The same for when my line went down.

The network is really good. And if there is bandwidth issues, it is a simple question of getting more allocated. Trust me guys, this is gonna be game changing (excuse the pun).

hmm, some gamers have been testing and found that the repsonses are terrible for the 4Mb uncapped....
used to get 10ms to the game server, now getting 100ms to the same server.
I'm waiting to see if others are getting the same repsonse time issues.

That's kind of the problem I had with Mweb when I was with them originally. Well, never to that degree (sounds a bit exaggerated), I would get 40-80ms on Mweb and 20-50ms on Axxess.

:D

Hi Lydon

xxx's asked me to get in touch you. We really appreciate that you helped us out with keeping the big reveal under wraps.

To say thanks, we've organised:
3 months complimentary Uncapped ADSL from MWEB
512 kbps data package

Haha SCORE!

On their terms and conditions it states the following....

"limitations
• No concurrent sessions. This means you can only log into your ADSL account from one location at a time."

Does this mean if I have to disconnect my PC when I want to go on Xbox LIVE?

If your Xbox and PC both connect through the same router then you wouldn't have to. (Not sure how Xbox's connect though.)

No. You can have as many PCs/Consoles as you want online in your house, but you will need to set up your router as a gateway. Basically the router will connect to the internet and then all other devices connect to the router. 1 internet connection, many devices using it.

wow cool thanks for quick reply :)

Was just asking because a while back a friend had a Mweb account and could only have one PC at a time surfing.

This offer seems really good

The 1 concurrent connection restriction is actually there to stop someone giving their account out to a few people and instead of one ADSL line downloading at 4mb, they would have to deal with 5 ADSL lines downloading at 4mb but only getting enough money to cover the cost of one. All uncapped offerings have this restriction as their pricing is based on speed and not usage.

Setting up a router as a gateway is actually the preferred way to connect a network to the internet as its more secure and easier to manage. If your router connects to the internet, you can effectively switch the firewalls off on all the PCs as they are no longer directly exposed. The outside world can only see the router, not the 10 PCs sitting behind it.
