Hooking your PS3 up to any LCD monitor - A dummy guide

After recieving a number of "yes you can" "No you can't" replies whilst on my quest to hook up my PS3 to my LCD monitor, I went forth to investigate and can confirm it can be done and very easily at that.

It is pretty darn-gawd simple, all you need to do is buy a HDMI to DVI cable, I found one at a gaming shop in Jhb which had them for R190 which is very reasonable.

You then need to sort our your sound. If you are wanting to use headphones you will need a 2 female RCA in to 1 female headphone jack. Like so.

If you plan on using a sound system you can either plug the RCA's from your PS3 directly into the system if it supports this, or you will need the following converter which will convert the 2 RCA's from the PS3 into female jacks where you can plug in normal speaker jacks.

And thats it!

That bottom converter is actually very difficult to find in South Africa if you lose the ones that come with the Logitech speakers. I lost mine and I looked around for 2 weeks for a replacement but couldn't find it locally. I eventually just gave up and had it imported.

That sucks, is there not something similar floating around?

Thanks Spooner, Now i can do this also. Sweet.

Np boet, I just couldn't bare to play another minute on my TV, it does it no justice. ;)

Thanx for that. Got a friend wants do this. Does the screen have to have audio input though?

Most screens don't have audio inputs, so you will have to use the PS3 component cable to get sound.

Either get a RCA to female headphone jack converter or get a RCA to 3 headphone jack converter. See the pics above.

is the quality still the same if you use a HDMI-DVi cable as opposed to a HDMI-HDMI cable?

Speedz I can't tell you, I have only ever tried with the DVI, all I can say is the quality is phenomenal. I can't imagine there would be that much difference.

I'm assuming that this will work on any console with a HDMI output?

I haven't tried it yet myself but I don't think it'll work. The space between you HDMI plug and your normal componant plug is too small for you to be able to connect both at the same time. I could be wrong, like I said I haven't tried it yet, but that's what I think. I bought the special D-SUB (VGA) cable connector thingy. Which is the best IMHO.

I'm lucky enough that my PC monitor has an HDMI port so I don't have to get the special cable, but it might be interesting to see if there would be a dif (if any).
