Final Fantasy 14 Beta Starts 11 March

Having a look at GW2, persistent world, high level, best graphics, epic story, amazing gameplay.

FREE TO PLAY.

And maintaining servers...

WOW = $15 per month x 10,000,000 (ten million) subscribers x 12 months = $1,800,000,000 per year
$1.8 Billion per year for server upkeep, I really don't think so.

Blizzard has perfected the art of ripping you off...

Yeah I am curious about Guild Wars 2. Since it is not out we cannot really compare, since some things may become apparent that are not known yet. It still sounds too good to be true - My inner cynic is screaming bloody murder at me.

I am perfectly happy to pay a sub (R100pm - sooo much *cough*) for a MMO since I feel I do get my monies worth in the majority of cases. I think many who complain are people who lack time to sink into most conventional MMO's, and therefore it IS a ripoff in that case.

Once you can show me a free-to-play MMO that offers what a pay-to-play MMO does, without tricks hidden behind the curtain, then I will change my mind. Some games like DDO and LotRO have gone free, and they are curious, I will see how that plays out. But until then I am happy paying because it is worth it.

Wow wtf ? YOU dont get it do you? WHY should I pay monthly subscriptions for a game, when CLEARLY IT IS POSSIBLE to run a MMORPG game WITHOUT subscriptions. Well, WOW (Blizzard) have brainwashed people, so I guess you could accept it like that.
caps-lock fail?

@Necuno idiots pay monthly subscriptions for games THEY ALREADY BOUGHT!

I refuse to may for the privilege of playing a game I already bought!
It's not a question of living with your mother or not being able to afford it, it's simply I refuse to support GREEDY companies.
ow yes, self-entitlement and handout plz :)

Technically you don't "buy" the game. You buy the license to play it. Hence you own the license for use, not the actual content itself. In the case of any subscription based game the license is subject to the EULA and general rules and regulations. Which in the case of subscription based MMO's would involve paying a monthly fee to play the game.

Most F2P MMO's are instance based (from what I can tell anyway) so there's no real monetary overhead involved for keeping a huge array of server clusters functional. Hence they don't have to charge the players a small fee to ensure there's enough funds available to keep everything running nicely. You think the servers maintain themselves?

Anyway, $12.99 per month is what ? R95.93 at today's exchange rate. An evening is more expensive.
but everyone wants a handout :D

Open Beta Test Starting Date Decided!

The open beta test will begin on Wednesday, September 1, 2010 at 2:00 (GMT).
The details for the FINAL FANTASY XIV Open Beta Test are described below.

Operating Procedure
Schedule:
Wednesday, September 1, 2010 at 2:00 (GMT)

*The Open Beta Test will be online continuously for 24 hours a day.
*Maintenance and any other announcements will be posted accordingly.

*Information on testing dates and times will also be posted on the official FINAL FANTASY XIV Twitter feed.
http://twitter.com/FF_XIV_JP

http://twitter.com/FF_XIV_FR

Log-in Capacity
During the initial stages of the beta test, the number of players allowed to be logged in at any given time will be limited, with capacity to gradually increase as adjustments are performed on server load. Should the maximum capacity already be reached when you attempt to log in, a message will appear indicating that the world is currently congested, and you will be asked to try again in a short while. At this time you will be placed on a waiting list in the order of attempted log-in time. To maintain your position on the waiting list, you must initiate the log-in procedure again within ten minutes of your first attempt.

Feedback Submission
While playing, testers who have been asked to submit opinions on anything at all regarding topics such as game balance issues, settings that you may have found difficult to understand, and features that you felt were inconvenient, unintuitive, or required further explanation are asked to use the feedback hread, and for those testers who have been assigned the task of reporting bugs are asked to use the bug report form.

The original Guild Wars was a game about SKILL and SKILLS, not epic items, expansions giving yo an advantage over the other players.

Everyone had the same skills, same levels or armor, maxed at level 20, same types of weapons that didn't give you an advantage over anyone else.

So what was the point of this? To have you develop skills and experiment with builds. Builds are your 8 Skills. You could change them, mash them up as you saw fit, etc and save them to a template so you can easily load it again when needed.

Guild Wars is also instanced. Guild Wars 2 won't be instanced, except for your Home Instance - where you can view your achievements etc. also certain parts of the story will be instanced as not to interfere with other players playing the story.

The original Guild Wars was a game about SKILL and SKILLS, not epic items, expansions giving yo an advantage over the other players.

Some people love having something to always work towards that is meaningful. It does not take long in Guild Wars to get all the skills you need, shit you can even buy them if I recall - Gaining titles is not meaningful character growth. Besides in other conventional MMO's comparing 2 equally geared players it still comes down to player SKILL, not the items. The items are there for us to keep working towards something and feel like we are constantly achieving something that has an impact on our characters.

Also you needed all the games for Guild Wars to get all the skills that matter. Only having 1 or 2 made you useless. So yeah in Guild Wars you also NEED ALL the other games / expansion or other players had an advantage.

Everyone had the same skills, same levels or armor, maxed at level 20, same types of weapons that didn't give you an advantage over anyone else.

Now I find that boring personally. So after 1 month of playing when you have gotten what you need (does not take long), you are basically playing a First Person Shooter with some RPG elements. Again some of us like having things that take ages to achieve and still require SKILL to play well.

So what was the point of this? To have you develop skills and experiment with builds. Builds are your 8 Skills. You could change them, mash them up as you saw fit, etc and save them to a template so you can easily load it again when needed.

Except most people generally use similar or the same builds for most things like most MMO's. Thing is most other MMO's have more actively useable skills at maximum level by FAR compared to Guild Wars, and yes like I said, those games ALSO require skill to play well!

At the end of the day comparing Guild Wars with more convientional MMORPG's is foolish since Guild Wars was designed to be different by design. It was easy to get to max lvl, gain skills and gear so you could compete fast. Other MMORpG's you have to sink tons of time in for often small gains which appeals to a different demographic of player. One wants quick access, while the other wants to waste time for endless gains.

Let's just see how Guild Wars 2 works compared to older styled MMORPG's. If they change the formula from Guild Wars too much they will lose a lot of fans.

lekker so far its been 5 meg -> 9 meg -> ±1.2gig update. i would seriously suggest using the torrent trick over using their downloader.

1) start downloader let it create the meta and patch file
2) exit the downloader
3) add the meta files (.torrent) from the folder*
4) download the .patch
5) copy the .patch files back to where they would have been in the folder*
6) start up downloader again and repeat 1-6 if needed for more slow files.

*look in

..\Documents\My Games\FINAL FANTASY XIV Beta Version\downloads\ffxiv-beta

there are folders like for example d96437e6

inside them are your patch / .torrent files:

..\patch - your .patch file goes here matching the existing .patch file
..\metainfo - your metainfo (.torrent) file is here.
