MWEB peering changes may effect local gaming

Well, surely it would only really affect gamers using Mweb accounts? As most local servers are either iGame or Telkom (SAIX, SGS) servers, thus anyone on non Mweb infrastructure wouldn't be affected?

Its a good move that needed to happen to bring SA's ridiculous peering costs inline with international standards. When its cheaper to peer internationally over Seacom than it is to peer locally, obviously something is seriously wrong. In the short term there are going to be higher latencies. If it all works out though, we will see substantially reduced bandwidth costs and better gaming performance as local traffic gets routed more efficiently.

iGame rely on vodacom, they will be affected.

Gamers on Mweb trying to play on iGame servers will be affected yes, but for anyone on IS, Webafrica, Telkom shouldn't have any issues surely?

They might since now they have to take a longer trip but it should not be too bad. Depends if any of those hopes when you do a traceroute go trough one of the mweb routers.

No but according to the article we will be routed via London. :/

International traffic won't behave any differently than it currently does. Its only traffic to content hosted within Telkom, MTN and Vodacom's networks (the fatcats that are overcharging for local peering and driving up bandwidth costs to line their pockets) that will be routed internationally instead of locally.

Which is a problem since international traffic as is stands is exceptionally poor in both WoW and Guild Wars.

AFAIK, all international traffic is routed through London. The point is that thy are not changing their international speeds, just rerouting local taffic. I play LoL and PES and have not yet seen any degradation in the services.

SEACOM also terminates somewhere in India, so in some cases data may come through there.

It's really funny to think that MWEB finds it cheaper to send local data traffic to London and back again, than to peer directly with another local provider. Probably indicates just how much these guys are charging for local transit - it's ridiculous. I applaud them for making a stand.

Have I noticed increased latency? Why Yes I have, about 10x more. Did it happen this afternoon? Nope, started last week :( Damn wow routing :<

I think it's awesome what Mweb is doing. Now I just wish that the major players like Telkom and MTN starts playing with. It will be a great step forward for South African bandwidth.
