We are not a very welcoming bunch....

New member
I have noticed that we as a community of gamers are not very welcoming to new members, I'm a member on many local and international forums and never have I seen so many unnecessarily remarks towards those that have just joined, its as though anyone below 20 posts is automatically treated like a spammer.

Posts like "wow your just trying to get to 20 post arnt you" and "you're not going to be here when the competitions are over" is in very bad taste in my opinion. Lets not forget that for many new members it might be the very first time in a forum and might not have a super earth shattering revelation to share in your thread.

I for one would love to see the community grow and I hate spammers as much as the next guy, but cannot help but think we are shooting ourselves in the foot.

I agree with Sockmonkey (+1 to my post count, awwwwwright!).

But seriously, everyone be nice to the new guys ;)

Like most communities mygaming has its core users who are here day in and day out and who have anything from several hundred to 19 thousand posts. Everybody starts with that first post and though i agree with you sock I do think that most users with under 20 posts are spammers. I've noticed users that become involved in the forum are those that slowly build to 20, not just posting for the sake of posting. At the same time i have seen members who joined the same time i did who only ever show up when there is a comp.

In this digital age it is not who you are behind the alias but what you post that defines you. If you post like a moron they people are going to treat you like a moron. Is that hard on new users... well yes. Survival of the fittest and all that.

So I welcome all new members to post but know that you will be judged on what you post.

Now that's what you call "being Frank" ;)

/Judge me, monkey! :p

I have a problem with the n00bs who post just to post (adding no value to the thread) and get the 20 posts for the comps, new members (newbs) are always good, and you can see it fro their first few posts.

In all honesty, when either myself or Toxin run the comps we do come across the odd one or two individuals that do spam their way to 20 posts and we do report them. But I reckon that should there be a problem and the new guys feel threatened against some of the senior guys then they should not feel compelled or threatened to say something to the mods...

It's not lekker being treated in such a derogatory manner and should be treated as equally as well all do unless stated otherwise or unless he/she causes problems to such an extent that people do want to report them.

What I do is I view their posts and check the time difference between posts and then in a reasonable manner and mature way, I approach the mods and give them the low down along with the link of their posts stating the given time period of how much and of what relevance they have added to those threads...

So please guys be nice to the new guys you were also there once before and weren't mistreated in a way like that.

I had less than 20 posts once and you guys didn't treat me bad. Thanks a bunch. I guess I should start entering competitions. :p

If all you want is 20 posts to enter a comp then at least have the courtesy to post something half decent: it really isn't much to ask in exchange for a cool prize. If you can't even be bothered to do that and would rather be a freeloader/spammer then FOD, IMHO.

In fact, the entire system of luring new members to the forum using prizes is flawed. Why don't we have a comp for 'Most interesting thread' or 'most helpful poster'? That way we get content and encourage discussions while still maintaining entry requirements.

The rep system thats "on the card" could help with that.

Well I'm probaly one of the few members who didn't join for the comps. I think I only entered my 1st comp at well over 1k posts. As far as treating newbies differently. I generally just ignore anybody with less that 100 post, for me thats sorta the golden number for determining a spammer vs a potental long term member.

Well said sycogrim, just as it is with anything that we all start anew, whether it be a new job, new school or any other venture you can think of. People should not be treated as lowly just because they are new.

Sorry If this sounds too frank, I'm usually one to take other people's view into consideration whenever I'm part of a conversation, but saying that you usually ignore people with "under a 100 posts" is kinda strange to me. This is just a forum, these are real people. You will encounter fools everywhere you go, spammers falling into that category, so you can't really judge the book by it's cover, you know?

I joined this forums so I could be part of the South African gaming community and this just happens to be the best forum I could find in regards to feeling as I am part of something to do with our country's gaming. If someone was to ignore me just because I have 30 posts, I wouldn't really feel very good about that. I didn't join here just to take advantage of any competitions. In fact, I don't think I will even enter one.

On a more personal note, I kinda feel obligated to say that I'm not digging this whole vibe that I'm getting from a lot of people in the IT/gaming sector or any online forum for that matter. It just feels like everyone has got this huge chip on their shoulder if they have been there longer than anyone else. If this is a kind of respect thing- that's not the way to gain respect from other people. Just so it's clear, I'm not pointing to anyone specific. It's just the whole representation that people have of themselves in general.

It's just as well we have no respect for some of the younger people today. It's not as if they could be the next Einstein. I guess all I'm trying to say is that people need to be more accepting in all ways.

Sorry if this post is a bit messy but I had a few beers, nothing major :D

We all started at <20 post, and yes there WILL be some assholes just posting for the sake of getting towards 20 post and then there will be those who make actual contributing post. Is it really necessary to make those that follow the rules of posting suffer because of some lazy keyboard-cow's spamming?

Don't you think it's because in that particular ecosystem, a new entrant is much more threatening than in other spheres of life. Younger gamers are generally better than their older counter-parts (if for nothing else than the fact that they CAN play the whole day) or the fact that there is a long held view that "new tech is for the younger generation" (and as much as I feel this is bullschit, it does hold some truth). There's always a cause for every action, and before judging you should really look at why it is like it is.

That said... I personally think that the South African gaming community is absolute schit. We are currently a small bunch and instead of helping each other and growing gaming in SA we are discouraging people from entering with bullschit attitudes (or forcing them to alternative measures). I'm neither a pro gamer nor am I a tech professional, but a lot of my friends in this country are and this is what I gleaned from many many talks with them.

Oh yeah - and the DotA community is the worst culprit imnsho.
