My maths teachers always taught me:
Inside Brackets first
Exponents & Roots & any terms separated by a line
Multiplication & Division (in order of occurence)
Addition & Subtraction (in order of occurence)

According to that it should be 288.

48÷2(9+3) reads the same as 48 / 2 * (9+3), which is 48 / 2 * 12 which is 288.

The fact that the multiplication sign isn't added in there is what gets most people, but it's still implied. It's still standard division and multiplication in the end.
 
Guys a word of advice the brackets actually mean you times whatever is in those brackets so initially speaking:

48/2(9+3)=288

48 divides 2 and gives you 24 obvious

9+3 = 12 obvious

now for those of you that remember your entry level algebra you will remember that anything inside brackets gets * by anything outside of the brackets regardless of what the maths equation is outside the brackets. :)

So therefore saying 24(12)=288

24 times 12 = 288

Get it, got it, GREAT STUFF!!! now get back to work you miserable sods :p

EDIT: I feel very sorry for the people who put there 2 lmao...

Yeh but regardless you still multiply after working out the dividing first...

You should notice that the 48/2 is not in brackets itself so you divide that first before you multiply into the brackets...
 
No he actually means multiplication as anything next to a bracket indicates multiplication. But it's still wrong imo. Division should be done first and then multiplied into the brackets as that's the order from left to right giving:
= 48 ÷ 2 x (12)
= 24 x (12)
= 288
 
Order of Operations
Do things in Brackets First
Exponents (Powers, Roots) before Multiply, Divide, Add or Subtract
Multiply or Divide before you Add or Subtract
Otherwise just go left to right

Yet if you do it so

48/2(9+3)

the correct order of operation would give you 2. this is just proof maths is more complicated the simpler it gets :D

it depends the brackets is defined as *, but if you follow the scientific method, you will get 2, because the calculator gets rid of the brackets first, which according to me is correct, if you follow order of operations.

if it was writen as so (48/2)(9+3) then it would be easy. (24)(12)=288 but writing it like this 48/2(9+3) is dumb.

Ummm ... no ... algebra is a lot more fancy, and includes a lot of x's and y's and other cool stuff. The above equation is Basic Arithmetic, which you've just failed.

It's a little tricky, because do you do 48/2 or 2*12 first. Multiply and Divide are at more or less the same place in order of operations as I remember them (school was very long ago), so either
48÷2(9+3)
=48÷2(12)
=48÷24
=2
OR
48÷2(9+3)
=24(12)
=288

I believe multiplication would get the upper hand though, so 288
