Hi All

I just got off the phone with my accounts manager at Telscum and from next week the telco sector is going on strike, so just prep yourselves for some outages.

Just thought I should put this out there

Ai tog... ek gaan ook sommer op strike omdat hulle strike. is bietjie lus vir om die vuur dans en sing van kwaad wees!

Oh my fuck. This is ridiculous, there should be a bloody law against holding the country ransom.

Ah hell. looks like I might be getting some SP time in. Hopefully everything will be back to normal by the time BF3/MW3/GoW3/etc come out

It does suck. Apparently there is an application that the commissioner of labor has to sign off on to allow the strike to continue, which was supposed to be done on Friday, but when it gets done this week that means that the strike will definitely continue from next week. My account manager said that it's probably gonna go on for about 2 weeks because Telscum are only gonna allow for like an 8% increase and those jackasses want something ridiculous like 15%. So we'll see how that pans out.

This won't work, at least with the mining strikers we get to see them toitoi outside in the streets.

Oh I don't know. I freak out if my internet goes down, and imagine the effect on business if there are outages, and a lot of government services will also not work without internet connections, and where businesses will try make another plan, government dept's will just say sorry, can't get onto the system, come back in a few weeks.

I suppose the difference will be if they sommer just strike, then it's not such a huge impact, but if they actually kill internet connectivity on a big scale, it'll screw the whole country.

This is actually BS.

If the people don't want to work, give their jobs to those that do.

Unfortunately with the way the country is structured. The government actually protects workers and from every angle, honestly if I had people striking and DEMANDING money, I would flip them off and tell them to go jump in a lake and go find another job. My stepdad did that to his workers, last year they just downed tools and decided they were gonna strike and he said "fine, but be warned if you're not at work tomorrow and working, you're all fired and you can bring the CCMA". He honestly does not give a shit as to what his staff say when it comes to that sort of working relationship, and I have the same attitude because these workers are just too god damn lazy...

Not telscum, but the municiple workers here are sabotaging our eskom lines in Pietermaritzburg leaving several areas without electricity. We went for 6 days without electricity, eventually came on today and hope it stays on :p.

I hope telscum workers don't do the same although I prefer adsl being down than the electricity.

I work at an internet cafe, so any outage of internet effects us very heavily

Best story ever at my dads company: He told the workers they got a right to join a union & the rep is coming along after work. One thing though...that merc the union rep is driving...who do you think pays for it? Sure enough union rep rocks up in a Merc...workers were not impressed. Though I think the fact that working conditions & pay are good anyway helped.

The strikes are an unfortunate consequence of people fighting for equality. Those who work in other industries should join and support the struggle of all workers in South Africa!

So fighting for an unjust salary and destroying things in the process while not doing the work they are suppose to do in their Jobs is called equality?

They mostly are lazy and never get the work done here in KZN. There is always rubbish everywhere and nothing is maintained or fixed plus sometimes they never pick up our rubbish or they are too busy having a tea break.

If they were actually doing the work and more I could understand why they would want a larger salary to support their family.

The people who do work well and want equality are the ones who never strike since they are content in their jobs and with the salary (even if it is unjust) and also find it pointless to fight, since people don't listen to them.

This isn't really something new. It happens all the time. There's a lot of times that Telkom has freeze periods where noone even notices. This is a little worse though, because when you have a fault, they won't do fuckall, but then again, as I said, what's new?

Also, when Telkom decides that they need to go on a tea-break for a week, they usually also announce a freeze period. Nothing unusual, to be honest. Just see this strike as an "extended tea-break" where not a single fsck will be given that day.
