8ta - 10GB special

I am considering signing the contract. I would like to get some feedback from users using the 8ta 10Gb promotional data package. I am looking for affordable and reliable Internet that I will use next year. I am an avid gamer but gaming performance is not a priority at the moment.

I am thinking of getting the Huawei E173, 7.2 Mbps modem priced at R349, is there any reason that I would want to buy the 21Mbps Huawei E367 modem priced at R699?

The following information I would like to know because I am worried about the contract.

  1. Where are you located?
  2. What is your average speed?
  3. What is the lowest download rate you had?
  4. What is your latency when gaming?

Please could you ping the following addresses for me.

  • games.saix.net
  • server24.eu

Your feedback will be appreciated!

I'm considering getting this myself. Unfortunately I can't help with any form of information that would provide you with that could help you arrive at a conclusion. 3G is definitely becoming a viable option for many, including myself. May even start rendering wifi access as unnecessary.

If anyone has any info requested above, I'd be keen to know too.

a tracert would also be nice...

Well I went through a thread of 50+ pages on MyBroadband and I have decided to take the deal. If everything goes according to plan I should have my connection up and running around Wednesday. I will then provide the information queried above, hopefully it will help make your decision easier. :)

One of my friends in Strand has this deal, and he's not too happy with it. He went into it blind, though, and expected to be able to play games on it. Any nub could have told him 3G isn't for gaming. The speeds aren't too bad, though. He claims to get around 150kb/s on downloads.

Ouch, that's not good. Thought one would at least receive 300kb/s. The MTN uncapped deal is tempting, but it's more expensive. Is 8ta coverage generally the same as MTN and the lot?

I am in Cape Town and apparently the speeds/signal strengh is of good quality. I will let you guys know.

Hi Zomosa, just some quick advice for you :-)

Test For Coverage before you sign up, 8ta's coverage is not so wide spread as MTN/Vodacom etc. The 10Gig Promo works ONLY on there own 8ta Towers and not on the MTN Towers so if there are no 8ta Towers in your area, you will have no luck.

On the MyBroadband 8ta Forum there is a Sticky with the title:
HOW TO MAKE YOUR 8TA PREPAID SIM NON-ROAMING

Look through that, to see how to test in your area. You may even be able to just pick up these new 3Gig Promo Sim Card's as well to use for testing purposes, it may be quicker.

I have to run now, will post later :)

Yeh, my biggest issue would be latency. FPSers are rubbish with high latency.... and 3G isn't known for it being any good.

I am going to Telkom tomorrow. Depending how long it takes to activate everything, I should have some results for you guys tomorrow.

DarthSWNT, I will ping local Call of Duty 4 servers for you.

Your feedback will be appreciated!

Im in the south of jhb. Average 5mb download and about 3 upload.
When i was playing bf3 beta i was using igame servers and had an acerage latency of 45.
yesterday i put the sim in my i9000 and downloaded a torrent at 700kbs average...
I also play fifa 12 online... I can play one game with a bit of stutter but the next game will be totally smooth. Thats why im not sure if the stutter is my fault but 85% of the time fifa 12 is smooth...
So far im very happy:) i hope it remains like this:)

From what I've heard, the issue isn't high pings, it's unstable pings that jump up and down every few seconds, so pinging the servers might not give accurate results.

Ah I see, okay well I will play two or three maps, that should give me a decent idea?

Pingtest seems to give a fairly good idea as to how your 3G connection will handle FPS games. Speedtest seems to always display a lower ping in it's results, I've got Speedtest readings showing pings from as low as 33ms which is nonsense I've never EVER had a ping as low as that. My ping ingame most of the time correspond to the Pingtest results (The above is to a CT Server). As Graal mentioned it's more the stabilty (This is the Jitter in the above result) of the connection now days that is a issue. With the current 3G connections the latency is fairly low now days, still not any where near ADSL latency but it has improved.

I've had 8ta for a few months now and have played a number of FPS games online since I've signed up. The decrease in latency from my previous 3G connections was a big shock (A good one mind you). Vodacom and Cell C gave me 100-130 ping ingame, Vodacom had High Jitter, Cell C had Low Jitter.

Vodacom = RSSI of +93dBm
Cell C = RSSI of -63dBm
8ta = RSSI of -77dBm

My 8ta Jitter is between Cell C and Vodacom, which in my opinion seems to be related to the RSSI of the three service providers.
So a lower RSSI should give a lower Jitter and hence a more stable ping <-----This is only MY opinion :)

1. I'm from Port Elizabeth
2. Between 6-7Mb often goes higher
3. This is a difficult one probably lowest around 150KB highest 900KB I'm not a big downloader
4. 45ms-50ms to CT Servers / 65ms-75ms to JHB Servers (I don't feel any Jitter on my side, so if there is, it's very small)

The above two results are some what misleading I do not have a rock solid ping like they portray in the result. Like you mentioned, testing it in game on a few maps will probably give you a better idea as to how your connection will handle the FPS games online.

Good Luck! :)

This is one of my MyBroadband Speedtest's I did a few days ago:

Test conducted on 20 October 2011 08:27:54 PM
Download Speed: 7956 kbps (994.5 KB/sec transfer rate)
Upload Speed: 3127 kbps (390.9 KB/sec transfer rate)
Latency: 75 ms

If I look through the Speedtest Results on the 8ta Forum, most of them are pulling in 300kb/s, not all of them mind you :)
Coverage is not as good as MTN/Vodacom but it seems to be expanding quickly.
I did mention in a post above to test it out first, but maybe I should stress a certain point.

What ever the 8ta people say about your coverage do not trust THAT, no matter if they say you are covered or even if your NOT covered. Do the testing your self, it is after all a 2 year Contract you will be signing into. There is no reason why you can't spend a little bit of time to make sure you will be receiving a decent connection for your money.

According to 8ta I'm NOT covered (It was a hassle to get a contract due to this) but I'm happy with my Non Coverage Connection ;)
