Kingdoms of Amalur - Reckoning

Some new development that is relevant to our discussion guys:

Reckoning may come to Steam after all.
With their version of a 'blue post', Reckoning employee Ngruk has this to say: "That would be incorrect With some hand wrangling, we were able to semi-negotiate our own Steam deal, I say semi because obviously we didn't have free reign to do it, not yet...." Good news for us who are wary of Origin.

EDIT: confirmed for steam

Great, now I'm getting :D

I downloaded it last night through Origin and will have a go at it this evening. The gameplay looks very fluid and well animated, also the attacks and spells look like they are on a grand scale. Can't wait to give this a go, hoping it lives up to the hype. I can't really see why there is so much of a fuss around Origin, it's still quite new and so far I think EA are on the right track. The interface needs a lot of work and I have an issue with where certain things are situated as the link to the demo of Kingdoms of Amalur is situated under the "Free Games" tab which was a little annoying. Also you don't need Origin opened to play BF3, you just need to access Battle Log from the web http://battlelog.battlefield.com/bf3/gate/ .

Origin opens even if you go through the browser.

Seeing as I don't own a credit card, I'm hoping that the retail version allows me to register the product on Steam and I hope that it is not restricted to Origin.

Retail copies will require Origin. The Steam listing seems to be through deals 38 Studios have to make themselves rather than through EA.

To those who have played the demo, please report back on how the game controls on the PC. Do you detect any form of consolitis?

I played on PC using a gamepad but I did look around the menus with kb/mouse and they are a bit clunky, can't say much about using it for gameplay. Looking at the forums only complaints about controls seem to be about the UI and lack of rebinding in the demo, but that's in the full game.

Tried out the demo a bit last night and it feels very familiar to DA2 in general. Didn't get around to finishing the demo last night, will try again tonight.

PUKE!
I guess I will have to get a friend to gift me Reckoning on steam and then reimburse them directly. I really don't want to spread my game library across different distribution platforms especially when on of them (Origin) is still unproven.

Camera is just terrible, I can't play a rpg that implements camera and handling this badly. Sheesh, makes skyrim's (or witcher) camera and control feels so futuristic...

I played the demo this weekend and found it enjoyable, with the exception of a couple of annoyances.

I was stuck looking at a black screen the first time. After googling for a while I found that you have to turn off post-processing. It seems to be a problem with ATI cards.

The game itself felt easy to get into. I did have a problem where the game would hang for about 2 seconds every time a got into a fight. The game also crashed after about 30 minutes of play.

As for the cosolitism I can't really comment, since I rarely play any games on consoles.

Agreed, the camera is terrible, so many instances when the camera would move behind objects. Also the combat feels very loose and is hardly groundbreaking like they claim it to be. I also found things to be a little too cartoony and it makes is hard to take anything that happens seriously.

It had enjoyable aspects I admit, but I reckon I'll wait for the game to go budget before I get it.

I wanted to report this, since I got frustrated with the demo, google ftw though. Hope it is really fixed in the full game.

There are a few minor things I dislike: the camera is a bit crap, then the menus... WTF another failed UI port to PC. Skyrim's while it irritates me to death, is still a little better. Needs a mod to fix the inventory system, don't think we will see mods in this game though? Gameplay is fun though, battles and animations are cool.... once you have sorted out through your 100 items to actually get to play.
