Which console to get

Personally, if I was thinking of buying a new console, I would hold out until the new generation. Not that that's going to be this year, but I would rather build myself a great PC rig and wait for another 18-24 months or so. Knowing myself, I would HAVE to have one of the new generation consoles (XBOX720?), so it would be a waste to buy the XBOX360 right now. And yes, I prefer the XBOX, mostly agreeing with what Hiro has said. :D

I dont agree........NOWS the best time to buy a xbox/ps3

Firstly all the games are DIRT cheap so theres a massive backlog of cheap games

Console prices start at R2100 for the base xbox whereas the next gen xbox720 will probably be in the 5-6k region

Lastly the world ends in 2012 so what you waiting for get the console ASAP :D

So the R900 I paid for the 250gig 360 slim was a really good price ? :)

Yeah mate, don't wait get one now if you really need one. The wait for the next next gen will be a few years off still. Do a costing and see what upgrading your PC vs buying a console now would be like and then make the call.

Then you wait for next gen and they come with their own set of RROD / YLOD issues...........

whereas the current machines in store are quite stable by now

I also DONT expect a massive leap in terms of graphics I doubt we will ever see the jump from ps1 to ps2 again.......

Ubertang you were robbed what about the R22 groupon xbox's ........

I've also got both, but prefer the PS3 by far. To give you an idea, I have about 62 PS3 games and only 5 X360 games. Each console has its pros and cons, but I think in the end the most important thing to consider is which of the exclusive titles you want to play the most. Obviously, as others have stated, most multi-plat titles look/perform better on the X360, but the excellent PS3 exclusives more than make up for that IMO.

The PS3 exclusives pretty much put the X360 exclusives to shame. Sure the X360 has Gears of War, Halo, Forza and a few others, but the PS3 has Uncharted, Killzone, Heavy Rain, Little Big Planet, inFAMOUS, Resistance, and a lot more. PS3 is also getting The Last of Us, which X360 is not. If I didn't have either console and had to choose now, I would get the PS3 purely based on what I have seen and read about The Last of Us.

While I will agree that Xbox live is a better service, it costs money to play against other people (which is ridiculous IMO) and therefore I prefer PSN. Blu-ray is also a huge advantage. Not only will you be able to watch blu-rays, but your discs won't get scratched (easily, like X360 discs) and some games that come on multiple discs on X360 will fit onto a single blu-ray, thereby eliminating (irritating) disc-swopping.

Another thing to consider (if you're into motion gaming) is whether you prefer Kinect to PS Move. Personally I prefer the Move as I like to have something in my hand when I'm controlling what's on the screen. The Sharpshooter accessory also works great with games like Killzone 3, Resistance 3 and House of the Dead: Overkill. IMO Kinect is purely for kids/casuals at this stage whereas the Move caters for casuals and hardcore gamers alike.

According to play fire i have 39 PS3 titles & 180 Xbox titles. :/

So it proves it, its down to personal preference.

even though gold membership is dirt cheap - R265 for the year

Theres just something WRONG about having to pay for something that PS3 is doing for free

Im yet to see the "buzz" as to why LIVE is better........??? I always hear about how "cool" it is but I cannot see whats so "cool"

never buy a next gen console @ launch (a mistake i did with the 360), so waiting for the next gen is a waste of time imo, firstly when nextgen hardware launches its usually full of bugs and have reliability issues.also launch games on next gen consoles usually only look +-10% better than current gen games cause dev's usually port current gen games over with minor improvements (remember nfs most wanted and burnout on the 360) or they're struggling to get to grips with the hardware and then the next gen launch games end up looking like upscaled current gen games.

if you have buddies with xboxes, you will immediately notice the benefits of LIVE and party chat. its cool to be able to chat with mates while each of you is doing something different. makes the LIVE experience feel so much more connected.

when i boot up my PSN i feel like im playing games in a vacuum. totally isolated and insulated from the world. and the quality of the voice chat on the PSN is terrible! i would gladly pay for a proper PSN experience. and PSN+ is a waste of time. had it for a year and barely made use of it.

plus the LIVE channels are cool. IGN Strategize. Insider Moves. Youtube App. etc,etc

PSN voip sucks BALLZ.
Live MP just works. Ask anyone whos played anygame, its never a mission.
Xbox has gone out of their way to make the xbox a social gaming device, parties, beacons, integrated viop all points to MS taking MP into account every step of the way.
Sony however doesn't even give you a headset/mic with your console, should tell you everything you need to know about their approach to multilayer.

I bought a blue-tooth headset for the PS3 and have barely used it for the simply reason that practically nobody on the PSN has a mic to talk back.

I personally also feel that Live is alot more stable than PSN and the reason MS can make it great and keep it is from the extra revenue from members paying for Live.

PS3 has some of the hugest game updates I have ever encountered. 1 gig sometimes. The biggest I have seen on xbox is 40 mbs.

its only recently that PSN introduced incremental updates. previously, each and every update would be 155 megs and would take DONKEY long, even on a 4meg line :-D and the system updates were always daft and pointless. MS updates were few and far in between but were always significant and meaningful. but thats more of an "aside" to this discussion :-)

I do own a xbox but as I mentioned im not a fan of online chat......

To the original poster I reckon you should also look at what internet connection you running

Im on 3g so chat for both xbox and ps3 is dismal

One thing though the ps3 sucks with update sizes whereas the xbox is very little on data

But anything on 3g will be crap, especially if you have medium to poor reception.

I dont know who you play with but here locally im usually the only one without a headset in matches........
