Rumour Next-gen Xbox chipset in production, launching late 2013

the GPU won’t be from the 7000 series, but the 6000 series, somewhat “akin” to the Radeon HD 6670 that launched last year

If that part is true then they shouldn't even bother. The 6670 is weak and definitely wont qualify as next generation. I thought the new consoles would be native 1080p on all games...

The only thing realistic about that is the launch date. I reckon the next gen xbox will launch late 2013 or early 2014.
Knowing Microsoft though it'll almost certainly be in October/November 2013, just in time for Christmas

i agree imo the 6870 would have been a better choice. as far as i can see the 720 will be like wii was to the gamecube in terms of processing power

Yeah noways that card runs games like bf3 on ultra @ 1080p on a 50",
MS needs to look at the 7 series for a 2013-2014 launch window.

SO many rumours, flip. Really hope this is false though, a half arsed upgrade wont go down too well with me. And a late 2013 release is miles away in terms of tech advances. They've gotta aim higher than this, surely.

Yes they should aim higher. But that being said, one must remember that next-gen on a console is a very different animal all together compared to PC gaming. Our current-gen PC hardware will easily be able to run a consoles next-gen graphics. If that makes sense.

But I do still agree. The upgrade will be kind of "half arsed" if these specs are true.

The next Xbox will ship to retailers in late October or early November of next year with six times the processing power of the Xbox 360, sources close to the project have told IGN.

Following initial reports from tech blogs Fudzilla and SemiAccurate, our sources have confirmed that mass production of the system's GPU will indeed begin by the end of 2012 but will not, however, be based on AMD's 7000 series Southern Islands GPU. Instead, the processor will be derived from the 6000 series, which was introduced last year. More specifically, it will be akin to the Radeon HD 6670, which offers support for DirectX11, multidisplay output, 3D and 1080p HD output. The chip currently has a market price of upwards of $79.99.

In real terms, the Xbox 720's raw graphics processing power is expected to be six times that of the Xbox 360 and will yield 20-percent greater performance than Nintendo's forthcoming console, the Wii U.

Developers are likely to receive development kits based on the system's final configuration in August. Projected pricing for the console was not provided.

Okay its is a major upgrade from current hardware, true enough. I i agree with most of the comments it should be based on AMD6000 series, cause it will be heavily out dated at launch, they should use the current 7000 series atleast it wont be too far behind in 2013.

It's a massive upgrade and I don't think it will really need a 7xxx ATI card.

I stand under correction when I say the following: The current XBox's run a custom ATI Xenos GFX processor running at, I believe, about 500MHz or something like that? And just look at what it can do. Undoubtedly the next-gen XBox will also customize this ATI 6xxx chipset to function as they need it and it will be more than enough to handle any games for a while. They need to keep costs down. Console games are frame locked anyway. So why use a higher end card that will end up giving exactly the same speeds of the lower end card? It brings down production costs etc using lower priced tech.

I don't pretend to be an expert, but I tend to agree. It is also worth noting that console games will be optimised to run on 1 set of hardware. Unlike a PC game that needs to be "generic" enough to run on many many thousands of combinations. So you don't need something quite as beefy to get the same performance.

Anyways, just my 5c worth.

and then sony steps out and announces that the ps4 will run on Nuclear energy :p

I lol'd.

Just imagine the add. The new PS4. Now with nuclear power (Fades to image of a nuclear explosion, except the mushroom cloud is replaced by a 1UP Mario mushroom)

Edit:

And in much fewer words you manage to say what I battled to say in a lengthy explanation.

I just want to see my sig. Miss you BF3.

/if thats not trolling i dont know

back on topic

i dont get why they would like to use the HD6000 instead of the new HD7000 series(i would think newer one could show off some green tech and give gamers one more reason why they would need to upgrade sooner rather than later)

Remember that the chips they use are specifically created for the console. Just like their current GFX that is in X-Boxes. It will simply be "based" off of the HD6xxx chipset. The features that get added will be specifically created for the new XBox. So being green etc will be part of the console as a whole.

Also, it's a next Gen console. So the reason for upgrading is "Upgrade or don't play the next gen console games :P"

You make a valid point. But I think it's important to remember they are not taking a HD6 series card and simply slapping it in the console. They will most likely build a new GFX processing unit around the HD6 chipset and add their own unique features around it (Shader capability etc; because they don't currently follow standard API standards for DirectX etc)

This article may be old, but it describes quite well how Microsoft, in partnership with ATI, create their unique GFX for their consoles:
