Soul Calibur V critic reviews

My point is ads like these or ones that uses a cheap marketing ploy (See Bulletstorms Swearing trailer) create a misconception regarding games, holding the medium back. (See the Facing Controversy Vid I posted)

Those lobbyist who keeps trying to ban the sale of violent video games don't care where an ad was aired, to them its all just ammo for the next round in the courts/congress/parliament.

In other words the lobbyist judges and generalizes gaming as a whole based on the ill-placed marketing rather than merit, therefore giving him ammo and a pretty good chance to bring gaming into disrepute. If I'm understanding you correctly (Correct me if I'm missing the point), then yes it's messed up to used this kind of marketing.

What I ask myself is how much input the devs have on the marketing, if any... :?

@omega Its cool man, the best the lobbyist can do is force the companies to adapt, and yes its cheap marketing ploys, but none the less they work.

as a side note this reminds me of South park's blame Canada plot in the movie :D

No the best (worst) the lobbyist can do is ban the import of games above a certain age restriction, ask any Australian or German they know the problem with this better than most since both countries, especially Aus just refuses to rate games it deems too violent and so they dont get released there. So no Syndicate, no Catherine, no Mass Effect, no Witcher 2. So no the lobbyists can do more than force companies to adapt.

They judge it not just on marketing but on every little bit of controversy gaming produces. Remember MW2 airport scene & the hoo-ha about that? And that specific level was well placed within the context of the game. Or Mass Effect's Alien Sex Scandal. Both examples where taken out of Context, in context they make sense. If people take thinks like this out of their context to further their point why would they not use something they dont have to take out of context?

So @omega your point would be that an advert placed in context to a specific country's moral and social acceptability will lead to a complete ban in another country with a different moral and social code, right.

Dont put words in my mouth, I never said it will lead to anything, i said it perpetuates a stigma that is harmful to the continual growth of Gaming as a serious Entertainment medium & Art form. As for the country/culture specific argument I've already covered that in a previous post and will not keep coming back to it. I consider that point irrelevant towards the larger argument I am making - those Soul Calibur ads just provided a good example and when I first saw it (The Cleavage Poster), because like I said I get 99.995% of my gaming related news online, I felt insulted as a gamer. (That specific part is subjective and clearly only a issue for me)

there we're three posters originally, Glad you didn't post the third one because that one was kind of sick. would probably have helped your case and point a lot more. Also would have pointed out the stupidity of the ad campaign.

Was speaking in hypothetical terms. continue your rant

My rants are reserved for "PC vs Console", "Console Kids Killed Gaming", "Greedy Game Company is Greedy" type threads. This has been a debate from my first post. Rants also tent to have ALOT MORE CAPITALS (See what i did there ;) ).

But let us not descend down this path because will only derail this most interesting of debates.

The Crotch shot is a fake, I found that out only after my initial post.

Considering this i will re-evaluate my position, and take an in-depth look at what the ill fated marketing company that came up with this had thought, lets start with where the geniuses sat down and collectively came up with 5 to 10 posters. next step get some sixteen year olds show it to them and the one that gets the most attention will be the clear winner. I know there is give or take 4 more steps to this but not gonna get into that step 1 and 4 will have to do.

Now the bad light these posters get also has a positive side too it (campaigns like these normally have a 50/50 effect)
Thus this has gotten your attention negatively, which our personal morals would define.

Any publicity is good publicity, even controversy sells. But that is also part of the problem; In COD 4 We had the Nuke Scene which shocked players, MW2 had to push harder to get that same Shock Value (Russian Airport Level) and got alot of controversial press for it, MW3 they had to go even further and added the now infamous home movie cinematic which to be fair had little bearing on the over all plot, it was in there for no other reason than to generate that same shock/controversy from MW2. See what Im getting at? My entire point, this entire thread, has been that; yes this kind of marketing sells BUT, and this is important, do we as gamers and lovers of this medium want really want to say "its ok, it doesn't hurt" anyone when this same controversy that is so juicy in sales is degrading the medium.

How do you PEGI a poster? We have already established that few parents pay attention to age restrictions & most retailers ignore them completely so plastering that all over building is going make -16 male adolescents want to play it because

so the PEGI 16 means bugger all. If I was under 16 I would consider it a reason to play the game, that's part of human psychology - we all want to do what we are not allowed to do.

You're conveniently disregarding the cultural differences at play here in order to facilitate your own stance. Normal day-time anime aimed at children has more occurrences on boobs, fanservice and nudity than this single ad campaign.

This marketing campaign does not exist beyond the boundaries of Japan. There's no innocent western kids that's going to be influenced by it any more than advertisements (of a similar nature) for perfumes, lingerie, etc which they currently see in stores or on billboards at the side of roads. If anyone's in the wrong here, it's the western media making this a big issue. They are the only ones who are drawing attention to it. You'd never be aware of this if these sites didn't deem it "newsworthy".

You're honestly making a mountain of a molehill by attempting to force your own set of morals onto a piece of advertising media that's not even directly/locally available to (nor direct at) you, without visiting local sites that copy/paste "news" from international sites. This is tabloid worthy "news" and not even worth putting this amount of discussion into it imho.

Take the history of comic books, saw the special thing on tv. there was a time when all comic books had the same degrading type of stories if i remember correctly after the death of superman issue. when ideas got pushed too far it reverted to something awesome. Was just a phase. Gaming is in the same boat bringing out generic overly used ideas and concepts. As a gamer I want something new , a fresh idea. when that turn around point gets struck the ad and campaigning will not need sensationalism to sell products. Can only hope it comes soon.

Did you just skip over my entire argument? It has nothing to do with my... Oh Frak it, if it hasn't broke though by now it never will. Like I said before watch the videos I posted and maybe, just maybe, (if you are able for disregard the "cultural" issue that I had hoped I put to bed 2 or 3 pages ago) you will understand the point I was trying to make, the point that used Ivy's jubblies as example.

Check out The Big Picture with MovieBob Chipman over on the escapist. (http://www.escapistmagazine.com/videos/view/the-big-picture) He has a few episodes about comics doing that, the 2 that deal with Miss Marvel is particularly interesting.

Yep we are already seeing games attempting more serious topics with more maturity. We can only hope that this catches on and publishers won't have to resort to this kind of thing to sell games.

You can't disregard the cultural issue, because it would completely alter the context of the discussion. In fact the actual "issue" or discussion is only present due to the presence of cultural differences.

It doesn't affect any of us any more than what I had for dinner affects you. This irresponsible culture of "reporting" on nonsense completely elevates irrelevant pieces of information to "newsworthy" stories.

I will have a look at these videos you are referring to, but I'll still obviously develop my own opinion on the topics of the videos.

I still dont understand the argument... How many children watch shows like Californication? Media in general has no filter when passed from HDD to HDD. Its like you're saying the worlds boob related marketing was pinned down on SC5... and then based on this people dont take gaming seriously. I take gaming seriously. Most of my friends on xbox live do. Competition's increasing, prizes from third party companies sponsoring competitions and tournements etc.

The amount of active gamers worldwide, the age difference, gaming used in media and sitcoms and movies based on games/franchises would indicate that gaming is taken seriously. If you ask me the stigma of 'gaming is for geeks' is still much MUCH more powerful than the stigma created by some boobs.

I wonder how many people here that play SC bought it because of the boobs? I dont choose characters based on who has boobs. And I've always loved the art and character styling of SC. And to be honest what attracted my attention more to Ivy wasnt her boobs... but her weapon. A sword whip? Thats just cool.

I dont know anybody that has chosen to play a game based on sexual attraction. Not since Leisure Suit Larry. And the last LSL was so crap it proved that a quality game is not just about boob size. SC is a damn good fighting game.

To say gaming not taken seriously because of this marketing seems far fetched. Ever since I got my xbox and started becoming active in forums i was suprised at how busy the industry is. Is gaming really not taken seriously????

Did you actually watch ANY of the vids I posted up, because if you did and you still dont get it no amount of me trying the explain it will EVER get through?
I think everyone seems to get stuck on the SC5 issue, it provided me with an example. My reasons for not buying it is my own.

You are looking at it as a gamer. Sure as a gamer you are bound to think "its ok", gamers take gaming seriously & function under the assumption that its taken seriously by non-gamer, serious as business yes, serious as a art form fuck no.
All 6 pages of my posts have been about how this sort of this, NOT JUST IVY TIT POSTER, but MW3's home movie cineamatic, the hot coffee controversy, Mass Effect Sex Simulator (Fox New taking Mass Effect's sex out of context and causing a huge hoo-haa), MW2 air port level, Six Days in Fallujah, pick a the gaming controversy, reflects on game to NON gamers, laymen, the average Joe, people who dont spend hours on a forum or game. People that dont love and understand the industry.

I am done trying to make the point, it has been made. I've provided reference and even external material by a respected video game web series regarding this "issue."
