Really loving the site, yotta. It's brought back my love for chess from quite a few years ago, and I've hardly been gaming because of it. When I do game, however, I've always got a ChessConquest window running with Steam's browser in the background.
How is it that some tournaments have been ongoing for more than 5 months? Have any tournaments been completed?
With apologies to yotta for butting in. I have some experience in Internet chess tournaments beyond ChessConquest, so I feel I can contribute something here.
Vixe, no tournament has finished yet despite the fact that five months have passed since the first one began. This is easy to understand from the nature of the ChessConquest format. I note the following points:
- Games take a significant amount of time to complete. A so-called blitz game typically takes more than a month to finish even under optimal conditions, and sometimes more. Other formats often take even longer.
- Add to that the possibility that one or both players will take leave during the course of a game if not during a tournament.
- Rematches are sometimes required if the scores are level after two games.
- Tournaments are constrained by the slowest matches. Assume that one match is completed in record time. If the other match takes a long time to complete because of the factors mentioned in the first points, the winner of the first match has to wait for the result. Imagine a large tournament where one finalist has been decided in record time, but the other half of the draw is delayed by four tight matches involving a single player. In other words, the average length of a tournament is not determined by the average length of games, but by the sum of the durations of the longest matches. In project management terms, this is called the "critical path." In ChessConquest, however, you have no way of knowing beforehand what the critical path will be
ChessConquest is by no means unique with regard to the duration of its tournaments. On a similar site I saw tournaments that took three years and longer to complete. In one absurd instance I saw the site's champion for 2009 being crowned before the championship for 2008 had been decided. That said, on other sites that I have seen the typical duration for tournaments seem to be anywhere from five to twelve months.
I hope this goes some way to answering your question. Do you have any further comment, yotta?
