ChessConquest - official discussion thread

How do I search for players I want to challenge by their username?

That one I do not know. You can click online 2 c who is currently online or go countries, click on 8 and go South Africa and go page by page "whistling: I would love to know the answer to this one.

I've also wanted to do that before.

Please add it yotta. :) Now that there's so many players it will be a nice feature to have.

Ok, since so many players are requesting a search feature, we'll add it. Should have the website updated with a search feature during the course of this week...

The new search feature has been added to the website. Just click on the "Search" link in the main menu.
Thanks Yotta i am sure going to try it out.

I got another request. I am playing way to many games at the moment, most of them tournament games and it is difficult to get time to get around everything. I was thinking it might be easier if my current games were sorted according how much or little time there is left to make a move. So the more urgent games are at the top and those with more time left at the bottom. That way i can manage the games a bit better?

Lol, I can relate. Perhaps there could be a different colour cup for each type of tournament?

Horlicks00 and Fivel... we've looked into sorting the games according to time left but this turned out to be a massive change to the code of the live website. This request has therefore been moved to the task list for ChessConquest version 2.

We did however color-code the cups according to Speed Kings, Medium Velocity and Epic Deep Thought tournaments. Trust this workaround will make the management of games easier until we release version 2.

Just waiting for the online activity to settle down a bit before I can update the changes, as to minimize the interruptions caused to live games during the update.

Really loving the site, yotta. It's brought back my love for chess from quite a few years ago, and I've hardly been gaming because of it. When I do game, however, I've always got a ChessConquest window running with Steam's browser in the background.

How is it that some tournaments have been ongoing for more than 5 months? Have any tournaments been completed?

Thanks yotta: you have been snappy in responding to requests. I confess that I have been sitting on a raft of ideas, including sorting the games by time left to respond. I support Fivel's request 100%. Perhaps I should submit my other ideas to you for consideration in the next release.

With apologies to yotta for butting in. I have some experience in Internet chess tournaments beyond ChessConquest, so I feel I can contribute something here.

Vixe, no tournament has finished yet despite the fact that five months have passed since the first one began. This is easy to understand from the nature of the ChessConquest format. I note the following points:
- Games take a significant amount of time to complete. A so-called blitz game typically takes more than a month to finish even under optimal conditions, and sometimes more. Other formats often take even longer.
- Add to that the possibility that one or both players will take leave during the course of a game if not during a tournament.
- Rematches are sometimes required if the scores are level after two games.
- Tournaments are constrained by the slowest matches. Assume that one match is completed in record time. If the other match takes a long time to complete because of the factors mentioned in the first points, the winner of the first match has to wait for the result. Imagine a large tournament where one finalist has been decided in record time, but the other half of the draw is delayed by four tight matches involving a single player. In other words, the average length of a tournament is not determined by the average length of games, but by the sum of the durations of the longest matches. In project management terms, this is called the "critical path." In ChessConquest, however, you have no way of knowing beforehand what the critical path will be :-)

ChessConquest is by no means unique with regard to the duration of its tournaments. On a similar site I saw tournaments that took three years and longer to complete. In one absurd instance I saw the site's champion for 2009 being crowned before the championship for 2008 had been decided. That said, on other sites that I have seen the typical duration for tournaments seem to be anywhere from five to twelve months.

I hope this goes some way to answering your question. Do you have any further comment, yotta?
