As far I know, there will be a physical copy after launch that you'd have to pick up from the retailer and no, there isn't any additional costs involved that I'm aware of.

General note: There seems to be a bit of confusion as to when the pre-purchase programme stops. We don't have an end date for this yet - official word from ArenaNet is that the 10th (today) is the start of the pre-purchase programme (i.e. the 10th isn't the one and only date you can pre-purchase). I don't know what's going on in the back-channels (Retailers -> Megarom -> NCSoft etc.) but I highly doubt that South African retailers will just stop acquiring pre-purchase keys after today.

EDIT: Soz, I forgot to say that the CE (Collector's Edtion) of the game is very much limited in terms of supply, so if you plan on purchasing it, today will probably be a good day to do that. According to Martin Kerstein (head CM at ArenaNet), they only plan on doing a limited print run for GW2 CE.

Also, for those thinking they'll miss out on the "Deluxe" version of the game (with all the in-game goodies), Aidan at ArenaNet (one of the European CM's) says the following:

Well after paying, was told will get a physical copy on disc, or a activation code. On release. In November?

The November (and June) dates that you sometimes see in online shops are very much a placeholder. If they say November, it's just a guess (or they're reading the placeholder date from their system). Officially, there isn't any word from ArenaNet in terms of an actual release date, but when it's announced, it will be hard to miss the news, as it will be huge.

In terms of speculation, it's anyone's guess ... my guess is around July/August based on the fact that there are more beta events in the future (one every month or so). Some of the more optimistic fans guess it at around June ... but we'll see. In any event, ArenaNet will announce it - no one aside from them knows what that date might be. They're continually making improvements on the game as the beta events goes on ... so they'll probably re-iterate upto the very last moment.

What we do know for sure, is that it will be released this year.

Well, it depends how much a mini-pet of Rytlock and the Mistfire Wolf Elite Skill is worth to you. It's mostly fluff ... so I won't be upgrading myself either. I have plenty of fluffy goodness waiting for me in my Hall of Monuments, plus there's always the cash shop if I need more cosmetic goodies. I was seriously considering the CE ... but it was just a tad too much in terms of what I feel comfortable with when it comes to spending money on games.

I hate that the DDE isn't limited as well. Totally ruins the exclusivity of the digital items included with the CE

I prefer the way they did it with GW1

Basically:When trying to register, at Step Two, after filling in the details and selecting "Next" it just bounces me back to the same page without an error message.

I think it's the physical items only that are meant to be exclusive - hence the massive jump between DDE and CE. I'd understand if they only made DDE available for a limited time, but cutting people out entirely probably wouldn't be great business sense.

I'd prefer a limited time on the DDE.

My issue is that the CE costs double that of the DDE, but has exactly the same items. Even with SWTOR we CE freaks at least got a unique vendor.

The fact that the standard can be upgraded to the DDE means that the digital items are pretty much a "free for all". Screw fandom, basically

It probably will be limited time. I remember joining GW and seeing people running around who had upgraded after the fact. But yeah ... the CE and DDE only share the same digital items - it's the physical stuff that's important here. I don't even know why I really wanted it ... apart from friggin bragging rights

And Nimatek - if you didn't order it today I doubt you'll get a CE

Well all GW1 players get some unique items that no-one else will have. In my case that's a full set of armour, a flaming sword and some other goodies.
