Diablo III - General Discussion Thread

WoW uses fairly substantial amounts of bandwidth in certain situations, especially raids. D3 apparently not so much, but I guess you can just wait a few days and then ask the guys with 384kbps lines.

I'm sorry, but you base this on what? I see a definite difference in line speed between our 1mb line at home and my 384 line at my flat on any online game I play. Even WoW.

I saw a difference as well going from 384k to 1024k.

Have a friend with 384k DSL and a 192k wireless connection will ask him how it plays. Although I am assuming he will route D3's traffic through the 384k.

Has anybody else noticed the "Diablo III Started Edition" in their battlenet account?

Its there.

Diablo III Starter Edition & Guest Pass
Diablo III Starter Edition provides players the ability to try out a limited version of Diablo III. Guest Pass keys allow a player to give friends the opportunity to play the Starter Edition of Diablo III. Guest Pass keys are included in all box copies of Diablo III.

Players on Starter Edition game licenses have the following restrictions:

Act I up to the Skeleton King is available
Level 13 cap
Matchmaking available only with other Starter Edition players
No Real Money Auction House access
How do I get the Diablo III Starter Edition?
Log into your Battle.net Account Management page and navigate to the Download Game Clients section. The Diablo III Starter Edition will be available for download there.

Players without a Battle.net account can create one, and then download the Starter Edition.

Note: The Diablo III Starter Edition will not be available without a Guest Pass until 30 days after the game launches.

How do I download the Diablo III Starter Edition?
Navigate to the Download Game Clients section of your Battle.net Account Management page and click the icon for your operating system under the Diablo III heading.

How do I upgrade from Starter Edition to the full version of Diablo III?
Log into Battle.net Account Management and select your copy of Diablo III Starter Edition on the Game Account list. On your Diablo III Starter Edition Game Management page, you will see your upgrade options on the right-hand side.

I have the same, and in the client downloads it shows this:

Maybe all beta users get access to the starter edition.

Hey guys. Been away this weekend, but haven't seen a post in this thread about the Installer changing. Previously, you could DL the installer to be ready to rock @ release (after the "final patch"). Blizzard recently posted this:

We became aware of an issue affecting the previously available German and EU English versions of the digital install downloader for Diablo III, which would not download all the necessary files. If you've pre-downloaded the digital version of the game in these languages before 10:00 AM CEST (9:00 AM GMT) on Saturday May 12, you must obtain the new downloaders to be able to install properly once the game is released on May 15. We apologize for the inconvenience, and ask that you please let friends and acquaintances know so they can begin downloading the working installer that's now available.

1. Obtain the new Diablo III digital downloader using the links below
2. Point the download save at the same directory as before
3. If you chose the correct directory only 50MB will need to be downloaded to fix your install, otherwise you'll re-download the entire ~7.6GB

New EU English Installer
New EU English Installer (Mac)

(*i removed the German links*)

Whether you repair your previous install or download the entire game again, it's necessary to use this new downloader to install and play the game when it launches.

If you've previously DL'd the 7.6GB install files, all it does is update those (50MB), provided you point to the same folder you downloaded to previously.

Maybe in 25man raiding or AV's. As I said, IF something goes above 30ish kb/s then yes.

I base this off years of comparing and experience. I played the beta on 384k and 4mb, lines out of the same exchange same ISP and there was 0 difference. (variation of maybe 1-2ms)

There are two reasons, one could be you have a different ISP/account type at home, might be something wrong with your line at your flat. OR, maybe WoW spiked over 30kb/s and you saw a minor difference. As monk mentioned, wow sometimes takes a lot of bandwith, add voice chat and maybe you get a spike.

So, I am 100% certian after talking to other people with 384 lines and myself playing on 384 as well as 4mb lines that there is no difference. I get 180ms in WoW on standard mweb uncapped. What do you get?

This is the ping to EU on a 384k line.

Correct. The speed of the ADSL line has nothing to do with the latency. (I'm not going to explain more, but if you don't know how it works then don't even comment, like some seems to have done earlier)

D3 uses +- 6kb/sec down and just about the same up for single play, so 384 is more than enough to handle that data. Sillicur and others explained the rest. The game would have worked fine 15 years ago on modem :p

If you have different latencies on different speed lines with D3 then its either your ISP or your line quality and is your responsibility to sort out.

GL HF Thuesday!

It seems that way. Oh well This way I can play on Monday Evening while I wait for my CE which arrives on Tuesday :D

Under the starter edition page, mine says the region is the America's, so we might only be able to use that from the morning.

I'm thinking I'm just going to stay out of all D3 related threads and sites from now on until I've finished the game, just in case. Too many risks :wtf:
