Last year I could buy a Seagate 2TB drive for R750 incl VAT from Esquire........ but that was last year..... before the floods. Now, this isn't a bad price at all considering Esquire are selling 2TB Seagates for R950 incl VAT.
 
It's days like these that I hate having to work till 6 during the week. :mad: Couldn't get it yesterday and now it's already sold out everywhere according to the Makro website. To add insult to injury I realized today that it was a USB3 enclosure as well...... :(

Oh well.
 
For those interested Makro have a special on for a 2TB Verbatim external USB3.0 drive for the same price. R999

Got one on Saturday and it looks and works really well.
 
I can't help feeling the hard drive manufacturers are milking that flood for more than it's worth, surely by now production has stabilised while prices remain high. 2TB drives were R750 pre flood, so I'm reluctant to buy more storage than absolutely needed until it gets back there.

Still these specials with 2TB external drives aren't to bad if you want and external drive.
 
Prices will remain this high for awhile, a couple of years ago there was an earthquake in Taiwan and it disrupted RAM production, the price of RAM skyrocketed from previous lows, it took almost 6 years to go back down to pre-quake levels. I remember it well, I was just about to buy my first stick of 16 megs and it went from R200 to R600 in a week :-(
 
I can't buy another harddrive without thinking how little I paid for it a couple of months ago. I know about the floods but to my brain it's counterintuitive. tech prices are supposed to go down

Actually not, the larger size drives drop in price while the smaller sizes actually increase in price, it's how it's always been. Except the flood just threw a massive spanner in the works and made the prices sky high for quite sometime. I remember buying a 2 gig for R1200 two years ago which is almost the same price for a 3TB.

Where did you find a 2.5" 2TB drive at all? I haven't even seen them in 5400rpm, but I only use 7200s for performance reasons. I have seen a Western Digital 1TB 7200 but that's it (no enclosure), but Western Digital is my "always dies a horrible death" brand. I know lots of people have never had a problem with them, everyone has their own brand to avoid ;)
