XCom Enemy Unknown

Had an epic battle and grouped up my soldiers since it was the only cover and the dam alien pulls out a grenade and kills 3 of my soldiers. I was like NOOOOO reload :D

Thats the worst, I play on Ironman so no reloading for me.

I had a terror mission in Perth where I was lucky enough to Spawn next to the building that contained about 5 Chrysalids & A cyberdisc. Between my Heavy ripping more than half the health off a group of tightly packed Aliens then my Sniper double tapped the Cyberdisk while one of my Support soldier took out the remaining Chrysalid. This flushed the other Chrysalids out allowing me to take them all down in 2 turns. Last 2 Floaters bought it when my sniper opened fire in Overwatch, managed to Save 18 of 20 civies. Was very awesome.

I hate those goddamn things. The second I hear Chrysalid noises I keep at least four of my troopers on Overwatch ... ALL. THE. TIME.

But I'm having epic fun - although I keep having to restart because of some shoddy decisions on my part. Also ... I wonder why by the time I get to June or so my soldiers suddenly can't shoot for shit :/ Had one of my heavies close enough to a Muton to actually piss in his face - 94% chance to hit, and he misses.

RAGE!!! :D

Finished "self-imposed" ironman classic last night. I only reloaded when I had glitches or bugs. Which luckily only happened once (when I couldn't target a muton no matter what).

Some things I didn't enjoy:
* Repetitiveness of music (it's composed by the Deus Ex:HR guy - and sometimes it feels like the same soundtrack because it's so limited)
* Limited tech tree (one new interceptor, few guns ...projectile -> laser -> plasma.... really?)
* All gun types basically do the same damage and just have different critical/range modifiers.
* Slow motion action-cam events for regular firing/overwatch firing (got boring after the 100th time). I disabled the action-cam but it still does the same animation in slow motion, you just see it from top-down.
* Only responding to one mission at a time. The challenge of playing the older UFO & XCom games on high difficulty modes was in responding to all the missions (the more you skip, the worse you do and the bigger your chances of failing). It irritated me that I could only have one skyranger and respond to only one of three abduction missions. Being an elite organisation dedicated to protecting the world from the alien threat, I should be able to have as many squads/skyrangers as I want.
* Cheating AI. I'd prefer more aliens or smarter aliens over cheating aliens who have +critical% +tohit%
* Few alien types
* Not enough UFO missions, not enough variety in UFO missions (forests, forests, forests)
* Clipping glitches
* Psionic enemies were a joke. Generally these enemies are on their own at the back of the UFO and in their turn just take over one soldier and that's it. They stand around without cover, and the mind-controlled soldier can't shoot in their turn. So they are much less of a threat than any other alien. So unless you get a panic chain-reaction it's not challenging at all.

Some things I did enjoy:
* Base management & construction
* Squad inventory management
* Storytelling and writing
* Council missions. Really enjoyed the VIP rescue & bomb defusal
* Soldier perks and special abilities
* General gameplay. Just moving your soldiers around and clearing the area of aliens is very fun. Different to the classic turn-based strategy games, but fun nonetheless.
* Art direction

Solid 8/10!

My first attempt I felt much like you. Chrysalid's wiped out 50% of my Squad one mission & 2 missions later wiped out an entire squad of six. This time round I tend to hunker down and overwatch like crazy.

I actually think the different weapon have different range bonuses and penalties. Like the LMG actually gets worse if the enemy is too close while Sniper Rifles get +Crit Chance on longer range. I prefer to engage most aliens at medium to long range, though I have one Vet Assault Soldier Nicknamed "Ziltch" that Sprints in Close and then blows a mutons head off with the scatter laser.

My Primary sniper has Squad Sight so I leave him close to the Sky Ranger in open terrain or on the high ground in more cluttered environments which has awarded me several surprise kills as muttons or try and flank my squad only to be taken out from across the map by my ever Watchful Sniper. My Favourite kill though was when a Float flew out from behind cover only to be blown away by the sniper while in mid flight, was epic.

I tend not to use the squad watch all that much - I've found myself in a tight spot more than once because I needed to move my sniper up and he couldn't fire a shot. I use the other skill (forget what it's called), so I can have them on overwatch (with Scope equipped) and put down covering fire when the aliens wander into view. I've gotten some epic reaction kills that way - and it looks awesome when it happens with the laser sniper rifle :)

My second Sniper uses Snap Shot though I am not so fond of the skill. I only move my sniper when the coat is well clear and try an position him where he will do the most damage. Squad site is great for extending range so when he is in Overwatch and an Alien comes into view of one of my other soldier that he has ling of sight on he take the shot (and hits 90% of the time) and with the double tap ability Snipers gets a high lvl he can fire twice (at a single target) in 1 round so when a Cyberdisc or Chrysalid does show up that is vital. Especially if headshot is ready, since I can use headshot followed by either a regular shot or a disabling shot. I also use my sniper last in every round so that if I dont see anything I can put him on Overwatch or move him.

I'll give that a try on my next restart (which will happen after my exams next week). Although if I know there's a chrysalid (and in later missions there's usually about 3 of them) I have my soldiers in uber-paranoid mode all the time and I inch them forward two at a time so there's always covering fire.

If a chrysalid is dumb enough to walk into view it usually has at least 2 soldiers shooting at it, although the one time I had 5 of my men burning loose at the damn thing.

It's kinda the equivalent of tossing a hand-grenade at a cockroach, but those things and their one-shot kills make me very nervous.

Yeah those fuckers can run halfway across the map and still kill a soldier with a single hit. I've only encountered them in Terror missions do they show up in other missions later?

.....man I need to get this game :(

Yes you do.

Yeah, mid game UFO missions, alien base, final mission.

Research and build your plasma sniper rifles asap, they can one shot a Chrysalid without a crit. I had two snipers with double tap & squad vision which let me take out 4 Chrisalids in one turn.

Also, take assaults on terror missions over supports and heavies. They get a perk that lets them make a reaction shot against any unit that gets within 4 tiles regardless of overwatch/shots fired before. If they have shotguns it tears up melee aliens.

Use arc throwers whenever you can, as this gets you alien gear.

Game gets significantly easier once you get plasma tech. Oh, and once you've researched things in the foundry that you want feel free to sell alien corpses. I learned there's no value in keeping them except to build one-time interceptor bonuses (but even that gets redundant once you get good interceptor tech)

I prefer the Support's abilities to move further than the others Since coupled with Squad Sight I can cover. I think both my Assault Vets have that ability anyways.

Yeah As soon as I can get plasma I will. Currently waiting to Research Archangel Armor since I already have Titan armor research just waiting the resources to build them.

I got them in my 4th or 5th Terror mission already - also, you'll find them if you down one of the bigger UFOs.

Happened to me too. :/

I cautiously started it on Normal, but because of the hand-holding through the first ~5 missions or so, I immediately regretted that decision. I think it's a FANTASTIC homage to the original series and plays like an updated XCOM should. I'm really really enjoying it and I will definitely play through on Classic mode once I'm done.

Just finished the game last night.

I won't spoil too much, but I'll say that I was sad when my volunteer at the end well, you'll see

This was my "A" squad about 80% into the game.
