Thread of PC Woes, Troubles, Problems, and Issues

when it comes to pc parts and the constant evolving of tech i dont see forking out more than 2 K for a motherboard being viable unless you want to go into a " mine is bigger than yours " debate.

Most people refer to it as being cheap , I call it bang for buck.

Asus let me down hard both me and a friend. My Rampage 3 would constantly reset my bios even after RMAd it still happened.

For me ill get a good ish board and then pump my cash into a top of the line GPU.

And the SSD is the single best item i have in my pc. All i can say is trust me the first time you boot from your SSd you would need a box of tissues as you will Jizz every where.

*EDIT*

There is nothing wrong with asus. Their returns is prolly the best handled in the business. its a personal choice that i wont go Asus easily and if i do it wont be the ROG versions of their boards .

Must agree with the Asus return policy there is no issues there, if it is broke they replace no hassles.

Ok thanks cranky, I decided to go with the setup you suggested, but since the Asrock extreme 4 mobo is sold out I will be buying a Asrock fatality instead. Also, from reading the reviews, it looks to be better than the Extreme 4 .

its the same thing just re branded fatality :D

But good choice. just get red ram to fit in with the colour scheme.

Hoping some one can help me here.
Recently lent my HDD (1TB WD) to my sister and when she returned it, it had a few issues. Now I don't know what she did to it and neither does she apparently.

Anyway, the facts:
  • Disk Manager still detects the HDD, showing the full volume and correct space used.
  • I can see some of the files in Explorer but cannot access them (although it takes very long to load/open certain folders
  • Cannot delete files from the HDD (says the files don't exist when I select delete)
  • Cannot defrag the HDD (says it cannot build an index)
  • Tried some recovery software that came with a different TRANSCEND HDD (says it cannot find the HDD)
I know I can just format the HDD to make it usable again (it continuously prompts me to do so) but I have 800GB of data on it which I'd prefer not to lose. Particularly all my unedited gameplay footage from the past year.

So any suggestions of good recovery software that I could use to recover the data? Or any other suggestions?

Any and all help would be much appreciated, thanks.

Okay, so my motherboard has four DIMM slots, two orange, two purple. I tested it last night and it seems both purple slots are dead, which explains why my PC refuses to work when I put in a second stick of RAM. Now my only option is to put in two sticks of 2gb RAM in the two orange DIMM slots, but I'm a bit unsure about one thing. This is what the manual says;

For dual channel configuration, you must always install identical (the same board,
speed, size and chip-type) DDR2 DIMM pair in the slots of the same color.

So, does that mean the exact same RAM, as in the same brand, or just matching specs?

Exactly the same specs. Also just to make sure, you put in the 2 sticks of ram in slot 1 and 3 or slot 2 and 4?

@ jGLZA

Is it an external HD or internal? If its external your sister might have disabled the read/write permission? If internal she might have reformatted your file system architecture? What OS do you have and what OS does she have?

Its an external HDD and we both run windows 7.
I don't think it has to do with the permissions as when I try to defrag or scan it can't find the HDD, wouldn't it prompt me about permissions or something?
I'll check though.

for your sake I hope she didn't drop it

but if a format can fix the problem perhaps it's just a really mean virus, in which case FORMAT

I use MiniTool Power Data Recovery 6.5, works very well and it's free :)

Yes, I got that far :p
well then I would say the next step would be try a windows system restore, if that doesn't work do a repair installation, if that doesn't work do a clean installation.

and if after all that it STILL doesn't work, your mobo is broke bro :p

Dude you have to be more specific. Does it give errors? Connections not displaying? PC says you have no audio device?

Yeah I know, I just kind of threw it in there...
Basically, it loads up, everything is working fine - no error messages. When I try play back an MP3, it says No Audio Device detected (I did re-install the drivers) As far as the connection goes, my network connections folder is empty, where in the past there was a LAN network which I had set up. When I try and create a new one, all the options are blocked out - and it says my connection has already been setup.

I've had the exact same problem some years ago, but for the life of me I can't remember the ending of that story

Right click on my computer and click manage, it will take you to computer management window. Double click "services and applications" , and then click on "services" . Scroll all the way down til you see " windows audio" , double click on it . Does it say "started" ? If it doesnt click on "start" .

Regarding your connection, also check in "services" for a network connection entry, and see if it is stopped.

ah yes! that sounds familiar....

Right, I did that.
My audio still fails to start (I get a 1608 dependency service failed or something like that).
Connection wise, it started, but I get nada. Tried to set up another connection and the same thing happened.

I smell a windows re-install in your near future :p
