SimCity 2013

Instead of trying to encourage players to play online by adding nice features to online play, they are forcing them to play online and then trying to justify it by adding a few features. Not the right approach if you ask me.

Yep it does sound cool, but they could have still offered that while allowing you to play offline should you so desire.

I can see where they come from though, with the whole online economy thing. But perhaps it would have been worth it to be playable in offline, and just ping the economy status every 20 mins or so.

That's not the reason they went online only though. The only reason people go online only is to try and curb piracy. And as my signature suggests that's just not cricket. If you buy the game legitimately you shouldn't have to suffer ANY consequences.

Granted. Many people are really angry about that. I was talking about the online economy specifically, though. DRM doesn't bother me, I don't deal with it much.

Simcity was difficult as a Kid.. build this massive City.. then no water.. no electric.. riots in the streets. when u just go with Disasters.. Giant robots and eathquakes floods.. bring down the whole Apocalypse down on those little digital buggers.. was soo much fun.

You can play offline by yourself, they have said that in the interviews many times.

Do you have a link for that?

You have to be online. Here is what they are saying on GameInformer. I don't really disagree with what this guy is saying about the online features.

The Online Thing
Every time we post anything on this site about SimCity, we see comments from outraged fans regarding the game’s controversial always-online feature. People don’t like sacrificing control over products they purchase – especially in a series that has such a long single-player tradition. "There are a lot of people who want us to be making a 1990s-era game. A lot people who want us to make SimCity4++. It's not the '90s anymore. The world has moved on," says Quigley. "We're building a new game in this new environment. The Internet is a thing now." From my time with SimCity, this goal of constant connectedness serves the game well. Yes, you need to be online to play, even in single-player. Yes, it doubles as a form of copy protection, but it doesn't impact the quality of the game mechanics. As someone who was skeptical of the decision early on, my time with the game has convinced me that it has benefits. It contributes to the sense of collaboration and cooperation, which (like it or not) are critical components of this game. Yes, it is still annoying that you can't play offline single-player. Part of me misses the idea of creating one massive city that does it all, but another part is looking forward to the possibilities with this new incarnation of SimCity.

I agree with Wyzak. The last always-online game that I bought had launch issues with unresponsive servers, latency issues and has yet to deliver on some of the promised online features. *Cough* Diablo 3 PVP *Cough*

I enjoyed the original 2D Simcity the most, would wait and see the reviews etc of this one before I jump in, don't have the time for long games anymore e.g. Diablo 3! Halo etc my kind a thing these days..

They are welcome to do just what they want, but I simply won't be buying the game if it's online-only. What developers need to realize is that it's fine and well to add to the game by adding nice features which encourage people to play online, but they are subtracting an enormous amount by forcing online-only play. For example, one of my favourite times to play Civ or Sim-city games is when I'm stuck in an airport terminal several times per year. I don't have an Internet connection at that time, and clearly the developers don't want me to be playing their game then. What happens when your Internet goes down? Oh sorry you can't play your games that you bought anymore. What happens if you go on vacation somewhere where you don't have Internet access or the 3G signal is crummy? Ah no sorry, we don't want you to buy our game then.

Connectivity will always be an issue, especially in countries in Africa and other parts of the world.
