Sony celebrates the legacy of PlayStation

So with the upcoming reveal of Sony's latest home console (February, 20), the PlayStation Orbis or PlayStation 4 (PS4). They now are releasing multiple short videos as part of a documentary chronicling the runaway success of their foray into the videogame console arena - joining gaming juggernauts the likes of Nintendo, SEGA and Microsoft. These videos are probably part of a marketing campaign designed to tug at the nostalgic heartstrings of Sony faithfuls who yearn for a modern Sony console as legendary of consoles past.
But with the underwhelming success of the PS3 compared to their latter day consoles will the PS4 be the console to rekindle the phenomenal success of the first two consoles or has Sony passed their peak and recessing into a steady decline?

The "problem" with the PS3 is that it remained too expensive for a long time while the PS2 was still available. It is an awesome console, and, if it's price drops significantly as a result of the PS4, it will have an even longer life than the PS2.

If I compare my Xbox 360 games collection over the 7 years I've had one, it would be in the 40+, if I compare my PS3 collection in the 5 years I've had it, it would be 10, literally it's even under my Gamecube which was 15 before it was stolen. The PS3 great for exclusives, not really much else.

It also works quite well as a blu ray and media player

I really hope the price drops.... I still don't own a PS3 or Xbox....

I'm afraid R1999.99 for the vanilla 4gb xbox and 12gb superslim PS3 model is the cheapest it's ever going to get.
About the streaming of PS3 and PS2 games though, wouldn't this feature be useless in developing/third world countries with crappy internet? I myself won't be able to make use of this feature because of my con..
I'm not sure what the install base of decent uncapped internet is but for such a big feature it would suck if you don't have/can't afford decent internet to stream games..
