Ban on alcohol advertising in SA and jobs

A ban on alcohol advertising will result in a loss of 12,000 jobs, The Times newspaper reported on Wednesday.

The ban would also result in an almost R1.8 billion loss in tax revenue.

Research by Econometrix revealed that sports teams, charities, and the arts would lose sponsorships totalling R322 million a year, The Times reported.

However, the ban would make little difference in the fight against alcohol abuse.

Feel a bit better for my agency of 12 years (from which I recently took premature retirement due to health complications). SA Breweries took their business elsewhere and there was huge upheaval at the office ... bet they're relieved now! Is this a nationwide, continent-wide or worldwide ban? As I recall, we were still managing the Smirnoff account for Nigeria, Ghana and Kenya.

Edit: My apologies. I did not read the title of the post thoroughly enough. Just SA it seems.

i just think they need to police the sale of alcohol better. when we were in the states recently at a baseball game you could not buy alcohol unless you had your id with you. also you were only allowed to buy 1 drink per id at a time. and they also stopped selling alcohol at a certain time during the match.

I don't really think that banning alcohol advertisements is going to make a big difference to the alcohol abuse statistics in our countries, but hopefully now I never have to see a crap Castle ad during the sport again.

Yeah I hope they ban it just because most alcohol ads are damn stupid. I don't drink myself so I don't really care about it otherwise.

Wonder how many people only go to rugby/soccer games just for the "bier tuin". (sorry CPT supoporters - wyn tuin)

This will kill support for some teams

Some of the Heineken ads were quite good though.

Still, it'll be nice not to sit through 5 booze ads before a movie at SterKinekor.

Feel sorry for the people that'll lose their jobs because of it. I think the figures in the article are actually understated.

Alcohol, tobacco, opiates and other illicit substances have been around since the dawn of time. "The man" will never be able to stop mankind from attempting to destroy himself without completely removing all alcohol, tobacco, (certain) plant/wild life (i.e. Cannabis, Datura stramonium, Colorado River toad, Psilocybin-containing mushrooms), illicit substances, pharmaceuticals, home care products, industrial chemicals ... the list is endless. Hell, you can get high on Nutmeg or Poppy Seeds (if you can stomach four to eight teaspoons of the dang stuff!) I don't think it's the advertising that's the problem, it's the lack of education — both in the home and in the world in general. Parents (often naïve themselves) tend to skirt around the issue or use threats to try and prevent their children from experimenting with drugs and alcohol. Thus far, this method has experienced a very low success rate ... Additionally, having the school guidance counsellor do a PowerPoint presentation in the auditorium about drugs and alcohol hasn't achieved much either. Kids need a more in-depth education process from those who've battled and triumphed over the aforementioned vices themselves.

this is dumb. not allowing alcohol advertising isn't going to stop people from drinking. it's been many years now since the banned the tobacco ads and people still smoke

While I agree that it may not do much in the short term, have you heard a cigarette ad recently? Those things really hype up cigarettes like smoking is the most wonderful thing you can ever do, like some kind of amazing lifestyle. I can only imagine how many young impressionable minds fell into that trap.

come to think about it, i have not seen any cigarette ads lately.

They were banned years and years ago. I'm not sure when exactly, but I remember the last ones I saw was either from pre-school or when I had just started primary school.

I think Camel used to have this smoking camel. That's the only one I really remember. There was another with a cowboy who did... something, I can't remember what, but I can't remember the brand of that one.

I think they have such restrictions in Nelspruit now... places aren't allowed to sell alcohol after I think 22:00. I think they should rather have made it later like midnight because now, some of the drunk people are driving home after they've been cut off at 22:00, and there are more cars on the road at 22:00 than at midnight, putting more people's lives in danger.

It won't affect the alcohol that I purchase, but my purchase aren't affected by advertisements at all. Like somebody posted above, it would be nice being able to go to the movies to see previews again instead of alcohol ads followed by some more alcohol ads. Especially that damn 15 minute long Johnny Walker ad.

You have a good point. sometimes they just repeat their ads the whole time.

No? Well here's one from the golden era of cigarettes below.

I got quite a surprise when I went to Europe recently. They don't have many qualms about advertising it and it's all over the airports in Germany and Italy.

I think it is a good thing that alcohol advertising will be banned. I do feel a bit bad for the people who will lose their jobs and all but the way alcohol is being advertised as though it is a regular drink I think this should have happened sooner. I just wish they would raise the legal drinking age to 21 or 23 even and have more roadblocks on the roads.
