The Official "MyGaming" Anime Thread

In Robin Williams' AMA he did on reddit yesterday it turned out that he's quite a huge anime fan & loves Ghost In the Shell / Cowboy Bebop.

It was quite cool how he didn't just say he likes anime, but he could pull character references out of comments by users as well.

I really wish I had a backlog :(

No you don't. 4TB's say's you are better off doing something else ;) I'll probably get through what I have now in 2015 and by then another 4TB's has piled up on me. That of course excludes DVD/BD and manga.

Shingeki no Kyojin finishes this Saturday... I plan to download it then (all the hype surrounding it is KILLING me) I'm told this anime is nothing short of epic (I received this info from a trusted friend, but he does tend to exaggerate slightly) and it fills both of your requirements, Sci-fi and action: Ginga Eiyuu Densetsu

Watching the episodes on their release dates, so the wait is killing me! 'Tis indeed one of the best Anime series I've ever watched.

Whose subs are you watching because I'm struggling to decide between GG, EveTaku and HorribleSubs/Crunchyroll?

HS is a direct Rip from CR. So it's 99% correct Japanese to English TL.

Also CR is a webrip so quality is slightly worse as opposed to the tele streams fansubbers work with, which are horrific as a RAW video they are all in 1080i so they get mixed very well into what you see as a final result.

EveTaku is a newer fansub group, don't know them too well although they seem to be competent enough to release good TL's

GG is probably the best (world class IMO) they have been subbing for years although they have come to dislike anime, and everything fansub related, they are as good as BSS, Nyron~N, Shinsen, EG, Dattebayo & the legendary Eclipse most of them have died since fansubbing is non profit and many of the "staff" were students or people that did it for fun.

So sometimes GG will intentionally miss TL something or troll with bad a translation - they are so good, you wouldn't even pick it up unless you were seriously paying attention to what is being said and what is being put into subs.

I was actually hoping that Eclipse would pick SnK up since it seems like a very similar anime to Claymore (probably my favourite anime! In my mind the end's been substituted with what's happened in the manga), but I'm too eager to watch SnK to see if anyone else decides to do a quality sub.

I guess I'll go for GG, I enjoyed their HoTD subs. Between 8 and 10 bit encoded videos... is there a noticeable difference in quality?

True, except I have to buy a new HDD every 8 - 12 months. Or add a new shelf for all my DVD's.

Eclipse is no longer. They claim they are dormant but have been like that since they completed subbing FMA:B I guess with the introduction or CR and AN there is really no need to fansub when it's easily accessed via stream across the net.

I've never been massive on anime such as bleach etc, but I found The ninja scrolls series to be fantastic. Anything low key like that still around?

Then again, macross zero was also pretty flippen epic. Reminds me of Robotech from when we were kids.

Vampire Hunter D: Bloodlust seems like something you'd enjoy. It's quick, the arts good, it's dubbed in English and it's pretty action filled (like Ninja Scroll)

Try black lagoon. I also never really liked bleach and that sort of anime. Or try beserk which is a medieval setting which gets pretty intense near the end. Or darker than black. Each of those are decent. No over the top anime facial features :p

Robotech technically is Macross, since Macross was never licensed officially in the USA. They based it loosely off of Macross.

Give Macross Frontier a go, it was a more recent release of the series circa 2004, but very well done nonetheless. FYI I still prefer Gundam

Does the Reaper Dream of Darkness Darker than Black?

I can recommend BTB as well, it's not too serious at times and has a good plot as well as nice memorable characters.

8 bit vs 10 bit

Difference in Quality 0
Difference in Size up to 70% more compression at 0 quality loss.

10 bit in laymans terms just has better compression efficiency especially when one is dealing with reference frame compression, problem with 10 bit is, not many hardware decoders such as TV's and Media players support it, as it needs a software decoder.

10 bit has been around for longer than 2 years, but due to it being finicky with playback most sub groups just use standard 8 bit.

Coppelion just made it onto my list as well.

and also Kyoukai no Kanata, because I'm a complete Kyoto Animation fanboy :p Much darker and more action packed than anything I've seen from them recently

I dropped Shingeki no Kyojin at episode 12 - the pacing was just much too brutally slow for me. I've got the rest of the episodes, so I might marathon them at a later date, but there's really nothing much pulling me back to the show right now. There were plenty of other shows I just enjoyed a lot more this past season.

Can't wait to start watching again. Tomorrow will be epic. Also stopped around ep 12. The anime is a bit gritty and different which is what makes it appealing. The pacing was a bit slow at that stage but honestly we all know there are a multitude of good/great stories which have slowish buildups to epicness.

And on that note I still enjoy bleach as well :D

The Manga is probably the best I have read in months now that they are on the final arc, a pity though.

Yeah but I think there is still tons left although it's the final arc.

I'm dying to see some Ichigo/Zaraki action though but I think that's still a few months away.
