Parental Corner

Our eldest (4.5 yrs old) gets a bug, and then runs a high fever for a day or 2 and kills the bug. Our youngest has been on antibiotics more times than I can remember and recently spent a week in hospital. He is asthmatic which comes with a whole lot of challenges. Hopefully he grows out if it.

That sounds rough man, I think a lot of kids do outgrow asthma though, hopefully he will.

Jeesh by the sounds of it all these kids seem very sick, did you guys do vaccinations and all that jazz? We are seriously contemplating increasing our medical aid to a better cover now that the child is on the way. After hearing all this about sickness i'm thinking we better soon.

PS: Apparently this forum thread is beating the TK today lawls.

Check out what your medical aid does offer already, they might cover it. I'm with Momentum, pretty much just a hospital plan, but they have a very nice maternity programme that's included, and (nice surprise), they are covering all the kid's vaccinations, plus two pediatrician visits in his first year.

You can get cheap vaccinations at government hospitals :(, or you can get much more expensive ones that aren't government subsidized, they are different vaccines, and the timetable differs slightly. Apparently the expensive ones don't make them as sick, which is cool, and no-one wants to wait around in government hospitals all day.

So, I go to Dischem, and pay R65 for admin fees and consultation with the sister, and they claim the extra R1500 or so straight from medical aid.

There are a lot of vaccinations to be done, so you should probably check if you're covered for it, and at that price, it'll get really expensive really quickly.

Yup this is exactly the concern. Will have my policy changed within the next cycle.

Maybe just call so long and ask if you're already covered. I didn't even know I was until I talked to them about it. And I think medical aids would rather pay for vaccinations than for treatment of kids who get sick because they didn't get them. Cheaper that way

Nah i know we aint, we with Discovery atm.

Two types of vaccinations, vaccinations that are given over the first couple of years of the kids lives ( can be costly) but very necessary to stop them getting some nasty bugs and then the annual flu type vaccination, which you should consider if they are attending school. Most medical aids pay for the mandatory vaccinations.

i had asthma as a kid and i have outgrown it(i do still sometimes get an allergy triggered attack but its not nearly as serious as when i was a kid and it rarely happens). i use to get an asthma attack on a weekly basis and in winter i usually had to go to hospital for anything from a day to a week. but i now believe i would not have had to go to hospital so much had my parents not smoked...

So this festive season, my kiddie sprouted a tooth and learned to crawl. He's getting really mobile now.

When they are crawling, watching the little ones negotiate stairs is really fascinating.

He hasn't tried stairs yet, I think he's so new to it that he'll just motor right off the edge face first. I'll have to teach him to climb down stairs still. I have seen other kids do the stairs thing, it's pretty funny, and they love to climb up and down them.

If you think stairs are scary you should see them on jungle gyms! My son was barely two and one day I went to school earlier to pick him up. Almost had a heart attack when I saw where he was...right on top of the tallest jungle gym. Must say I was amazed how well he handled it. We actually got him a nice one now for his 3rd birthday.

I can imagine that's hectic. In the last week, mine has figured out how to pull himself up on stuff to stand up. That's already making me freak out a bit.

Oh, and he is 8 months old today :-)
