The Decline of Strategy Gaming

What you guys are saying makes sense. I think another issue that has cropped up is the fact that gamers as culture are far less patient than we used to be. Say like 7/8 years ago (when strategy games where in their heyday), you never really knew when your next big game was going to release. You took what you could get in terms of gaming and strategy games offered enough replay value to sustain you till the next game you really wanted to play came out. Now however with the advent of DLC, Profile Achievements and almost every game having some form of multiplayer(whether functional or not); makes the significance of a strategy game a lot less. You don't need to have to learn and relearn different forms of military strategy and base building. You just download a new mission pack for BF3 or new cosmetics for SF4. or better yet just play more Angry Birds...you dont have to think while you do that.

BTW You guys should really play Total War : Shogun 2. Really an amazingly crafted game. And the most fun I've ever had was with Battle For Middle Earth 2.

This topic is extremely saddening for me too :(.

I enjoy RTS games far more than other genres.

Battle for Middle Earth 2 was probably my favourite. It was something about how the battles played out. Not too short or too long, great use of monsters, heroes, nice scale etc.

I really really (really) wanted a Battle for Middle Earth 3, but I really doubt that's ever going to happen ( insert man tears).

Rts fan here mainly the cnc series: generals and xpack, tiberium games upto kanes wrath, red alert series upto yuri's revenge.

Ra3 just felt disjointed and messed up. Cnc 4 i don't even want to speak about.

Another cool series that was great but the sequel messed up is Ground Control.

Special mentions for Act of War, World in Conflict and Company of Heroes

And of course Dawn of War 1 and 2

Does warhammer 40 000 Dawn of war fall into the rts. Since that and COH is the only one I seem to be able to get into. Civ 5 I tried but don't have such a long time to learn the game.

Ah, BFME2 was simply amazing. Many laughs were had when noobs who didn't understand the game mechanics lost entire armies by rushing their cavalry into pikemen.

It's such a pity the game is no longer played in MP. It was truly one of the best strategy games from the last decade.

CoH and DoW definitely fall under strategy and they're astonishing examples of RTS games. I loved DoW especially.

CnC really dropped the ball after the release of Kane's Wrath. But I guess they couldnt keep up the legacy forever. Although I didn't really enjoy Dawn of War 2. I think the best Dawn of War game was Dark Crusade...unless you go up against necrons

That's easily remedied - just play as the Dark Necrons. :D

Although I had a soft spot for playing as the Space Marines in the conquer the galaxy campaign.

Pffft chaos all the way. I wish they would make a decent rts for the fantasy warhammer games. Wait assemble studios is apparently warhammer total war sounds like my cup of tea. I am so going to play the vampire counts or the tomb kings.

If they can just give me a game in the vein of the original Dawn of War, I would be content. I liked DoW2, but ultimately I prefer more traditional base-building RTS games. DoW2 was a bit too focused on constant action for me.

Argh, now I'll have to go dig up my DoW disks again tonight and play it again.

I liked both. I eat up anything to do with warhammer.

Aaah yes, original Warhammer mechanics. Many a hours spent on that. Absolutely loved the original, and it's successors. Though they didn't quite capture the feeling, still a great awe-inspiring franchise.

In that case what do you think of the recent Space Hulk? Now that is true Warhammer mechanics.

You might also like the fact that DoW 3 might be alive again

I know nobody asked me what I think, but the recent Space Hulk was a really good translation from boardgame to videogame. :p

Even though it's ultimately a multiplayer game, the SP campaign wasn't half bad either. There were lots of scenarios where what I had to do seemed pretty straightforward and easy, just for the enemy to surprise me and end up devouring my squad instead.

Even so, it's ultimately a multiplayer game and that's where it shines. I don't know if I would really recommend it to a casual player, seeing as most people would likely be turned off by the turn-based, boardgame nature of it, but for anyone who has played the boardgame and finds it difficult to get a buddy to play with you this should be a godsend. I threw out my boardgame years ago because I never had anyone who could take an evening to play with me, so it's nice that I can now play it with my friends in a much shorter time over the internet.

Edit: Also, in case you didn't see, they released version 1.2 earlier today which includes a brand new Messengers of Purgatory campaign. It's only 3 missions long, but you can't argue with free.

I completely and utterly understand with CliveWoofer here. I absolutely love turn based strategy. I'll admit that Civ5 is an amazing game in this idea, but I can't help but think and remember Civ 4 & the original pioneer that started this. I cannot count the days, never mind hours I spent on those games.

@AlphaJohn: Can't really comment there, never owned or played Space Hulk as I thought they drifted away from the style that is Warhammer40k. If I'm not mistaken, this was the 3rd person type one?
But I'll your recomendations into consideration and take a look some time. Thanks. :)

You thinking Space Marine? Space Hulk is as close to 40K universe as you can get.

Does anyone think Heroes of Might and Magic (http://www.abandonia.com/en/games/797/Heroes+of+Might+and+Magic+%28Windows%29.html) was a decent strategy game, or am I as out of line in this thread as I was with my previous post mentioning Master of Orion and other TBS's :/

Special mention goes to the original series of Rainbow Six games, despite being a FPS I found that to be heavily strategy oriented, especially if you discarded the "default" tactics and created your own path to the objectives...

Heroes of might and magic had major strategy. But the third one was the best.
