Thread of PC Woes, Troubles, Problems, and Issues

I'd suggest downloading a hard drive test utility such as this one from Seagate or one from your hard drive manufacturer, running that and then seeing if it finds any errors. Also if you have another computer you could put your hard drive in their and test it.

Also to test memory I'd suggest using something like Memtest86+ and letting that run overnight to see if your memory is having any errors, it performs a lot of tests on the memory. I'm not sure how good the Windows 7 memory diagnostic is compared to it, but it's good to get a second opinion :)

Thanks for the advice, gonna check those out this weekend.

Ok, seems it my turn to be frustrated with PC issues.

Basically I've been running Windows 7 on Intel i7 2600K and lately, I've been getting some weird freezes. While working, all of a sudden, everything would just freeze and then after a couple of seconds, the mouse pointer would move again. However, it would be invisible on some screens (I have 3), while the cursor's image would still be stuck on the screen where the cursor was when it froze at first, so you can see the cursor moving on one screen while on the other two, you can only see it highlight the icons as you move over them, but no cursor. And during all of this, the system would still freeze intermittently and continues on like that until I restart my system. Further, if I press Ctrl+Alt+Del, my main screens shut down completely and I have to cold restart my pc.

So, after cloning my boot SSD to another partition so that I can dual-boot to my old OS, I did a clean install of Windows on my SSD. I actually installed Windows 8.1 this time and everything was fine until the exact same issue now happened while I was resuming a paused VM in VMWare Player. I haven't tried my gaming partition in a while though, but I suspect the issue will probably be on there as well.

Any ideas what can cause this?

So the computer freezes and then when it comes back the cursor doesn't show on some of your monitors?

Yes, and it then keeps freezing intermittently after the initial freeze, requiring a full restart to get the pc to be workable again.

I'm not to sure what might be causing that, it sounds like a very strange issue. I'd suggest testing your RAM and your hard drive for any faults. Maybe try reinstalling your video drivers or trying a beta one, though I don't think that would be the cause. Hopefully someone who knows of this problem can help you out more.

how old is your GPU and when last did you do a dust blow out. maybe when your gpu gets stressed it overheats cos the fan might be standing still. I had an issue like that on a work pc last week the GPU fan failed so every time it had to do some hard labor it would freeze then restart the pc

I have two Geforce 560 TIs so I guess I bought them somewhere in 2011. I'll check them out.
My other thoughts so far is that it might be the latest Nvidia driver causing this. On my Win7 OS, I did a full Windows update (incl GPU drivers) a couple of weeks ago and the problem hasn't been around this long. I think spending some time in my gaming OS (where I haven't updated GPU drivers in quite some time), should perhaps be a good indication.

@ Viper

From what I can recall the 560 Ti's sometimes have a problem with (something) and the fix was to downclock the cards slightly. Ask DCWarhound, I recall him speaking about that on the forum a while back.

Well my computer seem to have broked last weekend. Not an incredible train smash, but it dampens my gaming, specifically with Hearthstone.
I can always play on my Xbox or PS3, don't get me wrong, I love the quality time with GT6, but I still need to get back to my downloads as well, and I miss steam.

What I'm running:
i5 2600k
16GB DDR3
AMD HD5970
4x 1TB SATA HDD
*Cougar 750W PSU

*Now I think it's my PSU that has gone as the board spins up then cuts off and starts again, about every 4 seconds.

What am I looking at for a new dual rail PSU to accommodate the equipment?

Thanks,
Beo...

What is your budget?

hahaha.... I'm a single dad with a full time job living on the bread line (aren't we all?). :P

I have a 560Ti, wanna trade? =P
Wouldn't like to spend too much, I MIGHT (and I stress this) be able to get away with R750 =(
Does it have to be a 750W dual rail, or would a smaller Watt like 650W work (single rail)?

As long as the machine powers up along with all the devices and doesn't BSOD =P
I've done some calculations, and your rig should run perfectly find on a 500W to 550W.

But I'm always more cautious, so I found this PSU from Wootware: http://www.wootware.co.za/corsair-cp-9020051-ww-vs650-650w-desktop-power-supply.html

Its enough power to supply your rig even if you decide to do one or two upgrades.

Go through the specs when you have a chance but I would say that this card should work for your rig and budget, maybe:p

Thanks guys, I'll look at my budget end of month or next month.

Thanks for the troubles, much appreciated.

Argh!

So I dig out my old computer which was just sitting dormant and worked perfectly last I saw (a few months back), now powers up but no display or beeps.... lovely! :wtf:

Maybe try resetting the CMOS? See if that sorts it out.
