No. If you leave, it is "So long, Suckers!" and it's the company's problem how to replace you. The real worst part is that if you decide to stay, you may not get advancement because you've now become irreplaceable in your current position.

Roomys - that was the other reason it would have been better to wait a month or so - because its just opened I find their service and goods are rushed and not as good yet.

its the same here.... i run our collections practice virtually by myself, plus i have manage the office. if i leave here they will lose one of our biggest clients, cause the they wont employ someone with the same experience as me as ppl with my experience earn way more than what i get paid

It's really not your problem. If your company failed to do succession planning, it's their problem. Many years ago I operated as a one man IT show for a SME and the CEO decided it was a good idea to retrench me. I didn't fight it and did what they asked, packed my stuff and left. No handover, no sharing of the passwords to their domain controller, no sharing of any of their ISP contract details. I left (exactly as they asked). I got a call about six hours later asking for passwords, etc...

But to cut to the chase, succession planning and getting new/replacement staff should not be your concern. When you want to go, go. Don't let anybody stop you. Like my current CTO said to me "nobody is irreplaceable, some people just leave bigger holes than others"

Yeah I wouldn't turn down a better opportunity because I'm concerned about what will happen to the company I work for should I leave, but I would feel really bad because even my boss has no idea of what exactly my position currently entails. If I died tomorrow the business would be in a huge mess as small things like passwords for various things and how to work various systems are all solely in my head :p. I haven't even taken a decent break (3 weeks leave) in 3 years as the place would just not be able to function without me. But like you say, it would be his problem should that situation arise and at the end of the day it's his own fault. All I can do is express my concern at the fact that training someone to take over from me would be very difficult (which I've done many times), not to mention the fact that finding someone to take over my responsibilities for the pay I'm currently getting would be virtually impossible.

Yeah it's a tough situation and it really sucks. Unfortunately their lesson will only be learnt when it's too late.

Well I work for a call centre that produces leads on behalf of an Insolvency firm in the UK. So the tele-sellers call UK directors etc and if they admit to issues within their companies we arrange for one of the Insolvency Practioners in the UK to call them and hopefully proceed with sorting those issues out. I started as a tele-seller after high school and have worked my way up to what my contract now calls the "Data Manager". Mostly, I have to oversee the data coming in and out of our centre (verify quality of leads produced, confirm financials of the companies etc via credit rating agencies in the UK etc in addition to processing and cleansing the data we are sent for calling - this is mostly handled by another member below me though), but I am also the glorified PA to all the IP's in the UK (I handle their diaries and make sure appointments are made for times they are available etc) and also monitor their feedback on the leads sent to them and get someone to follow up on the lead again in the near future or decide if it's a waste of time and add it to our "do-not-call-again" list. Additionally I have to do the statistics and calculate commissions for the entire centre and monitor tele-seller/data staff performance and pass this on to the manager daily (could go into way more detail on this but not necessary :p). I also interview and train new-telesales staff on the data-side of things (Excel spreadsheet callsheets etc) as well as handle a few of the smaller IT aspects such as monitoring internet usage, the installation and maintenance of the VOIP phones and adding users to the domain and replacing faulty PC's etc etc.

Could go on but that's way more than I'm sure anyone here is interested in. But yeah, I have my hands full :p
 
flip i was just told by one of the agencies i sent my cv to that when someone asks why i am study for my LLB i must not say i want to be an attorney but that im am just doing it out of interest... i mean really who in their right mind would still want to be a secretary after completing their LLB degree?
 
/sigh

another week of being on call 24/7, of course it will come on a long weekend :(
really gatvol of unreliable people.

If it's that much of an issue, maybe you should just leave it off your CV?
