Heroes of Newerth.

How long will it take a complete noob to pick up this game guys? People seem to suggest you need to have played Dota?

the players get very upset when you die or do stupid n00bish things because it counts against them and their Public Skill Rating if your team loses; so it's understandable.

But yes, I got flamed like crazy my first few games, they guys aren't shy either. Maybe just try it with a friend first or play a 1vs1 just to get a feel of the game

Honestly this is what I hate about online environments. People need to just get over themselves... really.

People always seem to confuse someone being a Noob, and a new player. To me at least, it is not the same thing. People need to give others advice rather than being quick to belittle them for not knowing any better. Online games can very quickly fall into an elitist zone whereby the larger community become a**hole*. People in general need to practice a bit of temperance and tolerance for new players.

Sorry about that, but that kind of thing can really get to me :p. I hope HoN does not get too hostile towards new players. I am considering trying it since for some reason I missed out on the whole DotA experience *cough*

The game and its community are very similar to dota.

If you suck, your team is going to call you out on it and probably kick you from the game (this is an option in HoN). Its understandable, because 1 bad player quickly equates to a loss in dota/hon, you can't pull their weight for them, its both a pro and a con of this type of game. In HoN, losses also affect your public viewable statistics negatively, providing even more incentive to quickly get a handle on your bad/new players.

HoN being an almost identical copy of DoTA, is also damn near impenetrable due to its learning curve and players hating on you for wasting their time while trying to learn.

I'm fortunate in that I learnt to play DoTA in its early versions (when most people sucked) and stuck with it, I honestly don't know how anyone gets into it now. HoN tries to address this though by allowing you to create "NOOB only!" games where only new players can join the game and Pub Skill Rating (PSR effectiveness highly debatable) for balancing teams.

If you know how to play DoTA, HoN is going to be like bliss, its everything you wished DoTA was:
1. Statistics & drill downs.
2. Ingame-voice (with mute options ofcourse).
3. Incredible netcode that make every game feel like its a LAN game (even with international guys).
4. Obviously much needed and MASSIVE graphics update, widescreen support and gorgeous but clear spell effects.
5. Mana bars visible without clicking on people.
6. Teams health visible at all times top left (hideable).
7. Streamlined shops and recipe items buying.
8. The game is hosted on their servers, so your internet can die, Eskom can pull your power and you can still REJOIN THE GAME!
9. Choose game options and modes before the game starts.
10. ^^^ Allows players to find exactly the game they are looking for.
etc. etc. etc.

The list of improvements over DoTA in the current WIII engine is.... I could go on for pages. Icefrog has been doing an incredible job with DoTA considering he's had to work with the only the WIII map editor, good job to blizz as well for creating such a robust map editor as well, but seriously, its successor has now arrived.

There is an option to make a certain skill level type server, there are 3 of em, Noob server, dunno what the middle is, and a pro server. I always play the noob [but i feel that someones some pros go there].

Personally, I actually suck at HoN and I havent got any hostile comments against me (yet)

Also, there is a cool autobalance option which tries to make the game as even as possible, and when that option is done you usually find the game are pretty fun and not walk overs.

(having said that, I can stand going into a game and seeing 3 clan members on a side locked together - those ARE walkovers)

Just got off of a 9 hour HoN Spree! Whooo!!!!

Sleep is for the weak. I've had like 20 games now and my win percentage is only like 25% xD

But it's okay, as a non-dota player I found myself having to learn the ins and outs of the game very quickly and I seem to be improving (slightly).

Just want to say to all that the game is really well made and I agree with everything Blackhand has said 100%

Now come on iGame!! Show us the money!!!

Just for interest sake how much did your team rage in your first 20 games?

I think if I'd have to give you details, probably about 4-5 of the games had at least 1 member that was ragging on me for being such a total n00b. I find it's best to respond by calling then a n00b, and optionally a loser :) Cause as much as you suck, they probably suck too.

As mentioned earlier there are n00b only games and if you're in one and you're being called a n00b that's not really fair is it? If anything, they need to move up a class and they're too pissy to do it

No fair, I get yelled at every 3rd game...

ask your parents? hopefully it won't be for a while though seeing as the beta is going strong

My dad say he won't take the risk of entering his credit card details for a game, he's afraid S2 will withdraw all his money...

My dad is basically an anti-gamer. He hates games with passion.

rofl... he's such a n00b. Shopping with your credit card can be very safe. People are just n00bs sometimes, they live in the dark ages

Looks like 1.39-1.40 killed map hacking HoN forever. That means small bandwith decrease.

40meg (35dl/6Up) for a 60 minute game

That's about 11kb - 12kb per second.
