New Unreal Tournament on the horizon

The future of Unreal Tournament?

Be still, my heart. Epic Games vice president Mark Rein has posted the words on Twitter I've been waiting years for: Unreal Tournament is coming back. We don't know what form it will take, but Rein followed up his original tweet "I love Unreal Tournament, so excited for the comeback" with a confirmation—"Yes UT coming back!"—and a link to Epic's Unreal Engine Twitch account, where the future of Unreal Tournament will be revealed Thursday, May 8 at 2PM EST.

Since Epic plans to unveil its plans for Unreal Tournament on the Unreal Engine Twitch channel, and not the Epic Games channel, we can make a few guesses about the game. It may be a showpiece for Unreal Engine 4 in the way Gears of War was for Unreal Engine 3. It may simply be a tech demo for Unreal Engine 4 and not a full game. Wouldn't that be a drag.

I wouldn't mind if it's just a remake of UT2004. Either way I'm looking forward to the announcement.

I really want to buy UT3. Had it on XBOX years ago. Always been a huge van of UT franchise. I'm waiting for a Steam special again so I can grab it cheap.

Epic has announced that they are starting work on a new Unreal Tournament, with help and feedback from the community. The game will be completely free (not F2P) and will run on Windows, Mac, and Linux.

[h=2]THE FUTURE OF UNREAL TOURNAMENT BEGINS TODAY[/h]Steve Polge on May 08, 2014 | Community NewsWork on the future of Unreal Tournament begins today, and we’re happy to announce that we’re going to do this together, with you. We know that fans of the game are as passionate about Unreal Tournament as we are. We know that you have great ideas and strong opinions about where the game should go and what it should be. So let’s do something radical and make this game together, in the open, and for all of us.
[h=4]HERE’S THE PLAN:[/h]
  • We’ve created a small team of UT veterans that are beginning work on the project starting today.
  • From the very first line of code, the very first art created and design decision made, development will happen in the open, as a collaboration between Epic, UT fans and UE4 developers. We’ll be using forums for discussion, and Twitch streams for regular updates.
  • If you are a fan and you want to participate, create a free account and join the forum discussion.
  • All code and content will be available live to UE4 developers on GitHub.
  • The game will be true to its roots as a competitive FPS.
  • Development will be focused on Windows, Mac and Linux.
[h=4]SO WHAT’S THE CATCH?[/h]
  • It will take many months until the game is playable by gamers. This is real development from scratch.
  • When the game is playable, it will be free. Not free to play, just free.
  • We’ll eventually create a marketplace where developers, modders, artists and gamers can give away, buy and sell mods and content. Earnings from the marketplace will be split between the mod/content developer, and Epic. That’s how we plan to pay for the game.
A lot of this is brand new for Epic, and we don’t yet have everything figured out. Things will probablydefinitely go wrong from time to time, and when they do, we’ll have to work through them together. There will be a lot of tough decisions to make, and not every feature will make it into the game. But if you’re a fan of Unreal Tournament, a UE4 developer, or a future modder – or if you just want to learn how we make games – we hope you’ll join us. It’s going to be fun.

This will be worth keeping an eye on. I especially like this part:

We’ll eventually create a marketplace where developers, modders, artists and gamers can give away, buy and sell mods and content. Earnings from the marketplace will be split between the mod/content developer, and Epic. That’s how we plan to pay for the game.

I hope this turns out to be a highly successful business model. Maybe some other developers will then follow and we can get rid of "Pay 2 Win" once and for all.

I agree. I'm looking forward to seeing what they come up with.

Unreal Tournament 4

This looks great! Not too sure about the whole marketplace thing, I prefer to pay for a game and never having to worry about more purchases.... (gives mobile gaming a stinking look...)

But anyway, base game free is not too shabby!

Epic wants to develop Unreal Tournament 4 with you.

Epic senior programmer and UT project lead Steve Polge updated the company's blog on Thursday, reporting that development of a new Unreal Tournament installment has begun. While fans like myself will be jumping up and clicking their heels in glee, the announcement comes with an interesting twist; fans will also be involved in the development process.

"We're happy to announce that we're going to do this together, with you," Polge writes. "We know that fans of the game are as passionate about Unreal Tournament as we are. We know that you have great ideas and strong opinions about where the game should go and what it should be. So let's do something radical and make this game together, in the open, and for all of us."

According to Polge, Epic has already created a small team of Unreal Tournament veterans who are now working on the project. As he stated, development will be out in the open so that Epic, Unreal Engine 4 developers and UT fans can properly collaborate on the game. Twitch streams and forums will be used for discussion and regular updates.

"A lot of this is brand new for Epic, and we don't yet have everything figured out," he writes. "Things will probably definitely go wrong from time to time, and when they do, we'll have to work through them together. There will be a lot of tough decisions to make, and not every feature will make it into the game. But if you're a fan of Unreal Tournament, a UE4 developer, or a future modder – or if you just want to learn how we make games – we hope you'll join us. It's going to be fun."

Polge confirms that the new installment will stay true to the Unreal Tournament roots as a "competitive FPS," and development will be focused on Windows, Mac and Linux. UE4 developers will have access to all code and content stored on GitHub.

So when will gamers get a first taste of Unreal Tournament (4 or 2014)? Polge says development will take "many months" before it becomes playable, as Epic is starting from scratch with this installment. However, when it does become available, it will be free. Polge emphasizes that the game will be free period, and not free-to-play.

Now here's the catch; the game will be financed by a marketplace. Here gamers, modders, developers and whatnot can purchase and sell content and mods. Sales stemming from the marketplace products will be split between the modder/creator and Epic.

Additional information regarding the Unreal Tournament game can be found here in the Wiki. Sounds like now would be a good time to get re-acquainted with the Flak Cannon!

I don't know what all the hoo-haa is about. When the last UT was a "current" game almost no one played on the servers. So what's the point?

The point is, the last unreal game was shit... UT 2004 was probably the most fun game iv ever played... For some reason they missed the boat with UT 3... It wasnt terrible but it just didnt get that "cult" status 2004 got... I mean we played UT 2004 even after trying out UT 3...

Like I said earlier, while UT3 may not be as great as its predecessors, I still think it's way more fun than any of the Call of Duty or Battlefield games.

Couldn't agree more! I used to love the mods you could add to UT 2004, Most fun was capture the flag with Insta gib 1 shot kills "whistling:

The point is, there are people that want this, why deny them?

DUFAQ are you talking about me "denying" people? The elections are over champ. You can get off your horse now. And yes, you all enjoyed unreal tournament so much that the servers were at capacity all the time....NOT.

Be realistic, the game has not enjoyed the online community support that games like Battlefield have in absolute ages. So, my comment (or read "denying" - Eugene) is that everyone's going gaga over a game that seemingly has very little community support when it's actually available.

That, is my point.
