finally got it :D

This one is for all the adventure game lovers. Chapter two just released so I thought it's a good idea to share the fun ^_^

Here's chapter one, which I really enjoyed, hope you will too.

if you have the files available locally (yes i've even tested with one or 2 "borrowed from the internet" games) you can get steam to only download the updated files, cutting down on your download time dramatically. just pop them in your steamapps/common folder where you installing the game before you start the download and steam will discover existing files and just update as needed. REALLY helps with the big games :D

I went one step further. On my laptop I moved my entire Steam folder to a 2TB Portable so when I reload I just run Steam from that location and it installs the services on 1st run for said PC. If I need to have a game moved from my desktop to my laptop I just plug in the USB and copy the game onto it.

What I have learned from this practice is if you just copy \Steam\SteamApps\common\<Game Name> files you still have to run the install in Steam, that will normally download some files, but if you find the appmanifest file as well as the game it shows already installed in Steam and you dont need to download zip.

To get the right Steam\SteamApps\appmanifest_XXXXX.acf file just check the games URL page ie:
http://store.steampowered.com/app/44340 will be Steam\Steamapps\appmanifest_44340.acf

Ah nice, I have ALMOST a similar situation, in that I've got an internal drive thats not my C drive to be my steam install location. Good to know when i format pc i can most likely be up and running even quicker. Although to be honest the whole discovery process, while long, is a crapton quicker than downloading +-450gb of data :P
 
I exclusively use the steam backups feature now. I backup all games that I am not currently playing, and then restore the backup when I want to play them. The days of a 100+GB Steam folder is over.

PS: I recommend that for the first time you backup all of your files and then completely delete the steam folder and redownload it from the website. That way you will get rid of all the sparse files.
