64-bit OS (Windows 7?)

Been using 6GB RAM and Vista 64 bit for about about a year and a half now. Most of my office also uses Vista 64.

While XP 64 was a compatibility nightmare, Vista 64 has been stable as a rock for quite some time now and Vista 64 driver issues were resolved long ago and its completely compatible with 32 bit applications. You also get a boost to your gaming performance (IMO, if its a gaming PC it should be 64 bit now). Most of the stigma attached to 64 bit comes from early adopters with XP 64. Now, I'd say your late to the party =).

There's really no reason not to move over to 64 bit, your going to upgrade to 4GB+ of RAM at some point, probably soon, then at least you don't have to change to 64 bit windows at the same time. Heck, there was a good chance Windows 7 wasn't even going to be 32 bit.

As for the way programs are separated into Program Files and Program Files(x86), that's purely "cosmetic". You can copy 64 bit apps into the x86 folder and vice versa and they will work.

I'm also gonna try Win7 64 bit. Coz I recently installed Vista 64 and it's running fine so far. I'm getting a new mobo and be forced to format.

Those who are msdn and technet subscribers have already gotten activation keys and the rtm as part of their subscription to those services.

I'm one of those people too :) running Win 7 Ultimate 64bit on an AMD quad core Phenom with 4GB ram. The only problem with it is a bug that causes VERY slow copying from DVD to HDD. It took 2 hours to install  but it seems to be just me experiencing this problem, so I think its a driver issue.

Have you checked to see if there's any update chipset or motherboard drivers?? From what your saying I agree that its a driver issue.

There are many benefits of 64bit version of Windows. I have had no compatibility problems with software. All of my 32 bit applications work just OK and I can also run new 64bit software. The one issue is with drivers. Before upgrading to 64bit, please ensure that all of the hardware critical to you such as sound cards, printers, USB devices must have 64bit driver available. Many devices that do not have 64 bit drivers won't work on 64 bit.

slap some call of cthulhu dark coners of the earth and vampire masquerade bloodlines into that setup then we talk ;)

but i also run win7 64x, for the two mentioned titles it is dual boot to 32x win xp.

I only run 64bit OS's - Whoever said they are slower than 32 bit is I am sad to say clueless....I just upgraded to Win7 Ult 64bit from Vista 64bit ult and I cant say the improvement is that great, but once you go 64bit you wont turn back, it is amazing and doesnt require a format every 5 months.

Been using Windows 7 64bit with zero issues. I don't have 4 gigs of RAM yet, but at least I'm ready for that upgrade path without a need to reinstall.

Been having an awesome 64 bit experience, I haven't had any issues at all with 32 bit apps (apart from anti viruses and drivers obviously)

surprised to see that even my quake 3 works, and better than vista FTW.

I've been using Vista x64 since vista's realease. It's the most stable OS I've ever owned. Plus 6Gb or RAM is awesome for RAM Hungry power applications and you can have multiple 32Bit apps who's MAX RAM (due to being 32bit) usage is 2Gb without any performance hit. I'm all for x64.

Microsoft's WOW64 coding is superb, they dropped the ball with XP64 but Vista is pure joy! Infact - there were several machines with Vista that gave us problems @ my office, I re-installed them with x64 and they no longer gave any problems.

Driver problems are almost no-existenct these days, unless you've got some ancient hardware, in which case, you should really be upgrading or replacing it anyway.
