Been using 6GB RAM and Vista 64 bit for about about a year and a half now. Most of my office also uses Vista 64.
While XP 64 was a compatibility nightmare, Vista 64 has been stable as a rock for quite some time now and Vista 64 driver issues were resolved long ago and its completely compatible with 32 bit applications. You also get a boost to your gaming performance (IMO, if its a gaming PC it should be 64 bit now). Most of the stigma attached to 64 bit comes from early adopters with XP 64. Now, I'd say your late to the party =).
There's really no reason not to move over to 64 bit, your going to upgrade to 4GB+ of RAM at some point, probably soon, then at least you don't have to change to 64 bit windows at the same time. Heck, there was a good chance Windows 7 wasn't even going to be 32 bit.
As for the way programs are separated into Program Files and Program Files(x86), that's purely "cosmetic". You can copy 64 bit apps into the x86 folder and vice versa and they will work.
