Activision is making Battleship

Yes, there is, and it looks absolutely shit.

Would we really be worse off if no one spent $200M to make this?

I wonder if Activision is going to base this on the Quake 3 engine?

Activision seems to make two different things;

Call of Duty and crappy licensed games. :)

Alien vs Predator movie was decidedly mediocre.

Chronicles of Riddick: Escape from Butcher Bay is the only movie -> game franchise I can think of that really worked.

Alien vs Predator movie was decidedly mediocre.

The first one was decidedly mediocre. The second was just downright rubbish. The producers opted to make the scenes darker to make the tone of the movie feel a bit more grim, but instead they made everyone squint because nobody could see what the hell was going on on-screen. Just about every review on the movie panned it for having scenes that were so dark that you literally couldn't see anything.

Chronicles of Riddick is one of the best game-movie crossovers ever. It's an absolute must-play, especially the remastered Butcher's Bay campaign. I take mine with me wherever I go, because I always randomly start feeling like playing it again. Just a pity the multiplayer never really picked up much. Could have been epic.

Key to making game-movie tie-ins is using games to flesh out the universe.

Technically KOTOR & about every Star Wars or Star Trek game is a movie/tv series tie-in & while some are shit (Force Unleashed 2) others are among some of the greatest games ever, Knights of the Old Republic jumps to mind. Reason not all of them suck is they dont try and recreate what happens in the movie. The reverse is also true, if you make a movie based on a game, instead of trying to retell the games story or re-interpret the plot (about every game to movie conversion falls into this trap) use the movie to expand on the in game universe. While the Red Faction Origins movie isn't going to win any awards what it did do right is keep the film rooted in the mythology of the games, specifically Red Faction Guerrilla & Armageddon (film take place between the two games.)
