Key to making game-movie tie-ins is using games to flesh out the universe.
Technically KOTOR & about every Star Wars or Star Trek game is a movie/tv series tie-in & while some are shit (Force Unleashed 2) others are among some of the greatest games ever, Knights of the Old Republic jumps to mind. Reason not all of them suck is they dont try and recreate what happens in the movie. The reverse is also true, if you make a movie based on a game, instead of trying to retell the games story or re-interpret the plot (about every game to movie conversion falls into this trap) use the movie to expand on the in game universe. While the Red Faction Origins movie isn't going to win any awards what it did do right is keep the film rooted in the mythology of the games, specifically Red Faction Guerrilla & Armageddon (film take place between the two games.)
