AMD Could Potentially Get 19B investment

More news from AMD today as it seems the company might get a nice cash injection. Loongson Technology, a CPU joint venture between Beijing-based chip designer BLX IC Design Corp, the Chinese Academy of Sciences and the Institute of Computing Technology, is set to make key investments into AMD's product lines and technologies.

Loongson and AMD have worked together before in the past. AMD’s HyperTransport and PCI South as well as North bridges were in previous Godson silicon, so for Loongson AMD is not entirely foreign territory. The two opened an R&D center in December 2003 in order to develop what the two hoped would be something to counter the goliath of Intel.

Investing in AMD’s various technologies and product lines would be a much easier transaction for Loongson. It would not have to deal with the regulatory burden the US government might impose, nor would it need to negotiate an x86 license from Intel (NASDAQ: INTC). It is not yet clear what the end result of such investments might look like, but it could be that Loongson markets future Godson systems with more AMD inside — such as GCN GPU architecture.

Loongson earns their reputation for its line of MIPS-based Godson processors. The Chinese firm has reserved 120 million yuan (around US$19.2 billion) for a series of acquisitions and strategic investments.

How much money AMD is going to retrieve we do now know, but it could be substantial.

This is a game changer when it happens, AMD will finally be able to spend the same amount as Intel on R&D.

If AMD can get their cpu's to where their new R3000 Graphics cards are, then I could see them getting this investment really easily.

I would like a new APU with the grapic abilities of at least the R9-270x... That would change the SFF PC market considerably and really allow you to build a "PC console" or Steambox. I want a tiny little PC box gracing my wall unit next to the PS3 and PS4. :)

Amd made a major mistake selling off their fab plants a few years ago, ever since they did that they've been lagging behind intel, they really need to get back to the level of their athlon 64 day.

AMD needs to get rid of the current board members, all they care about is filling their own pockets and in the process they are destroying AMD. They need to spend some serious cash in R&D and maybe then they'll catch Intel.

AFAIK, Intel did a lot of back door trades with the Prescott chips to beat AMD's AMD64 chips. At that time AM64 was walking all over Intel's slower and hotter Pentium 4. Intel got caught and paid the fine but AMD had already suffered a major loss.

I really hope they revive ATI then ( maybe not the brand but the top of the line quality in graphics technology)

Remember Ati Radeon & Ati Saphire in the hay days? :) ahhh so wonderful

well my AMD Sapphire 7970 still kicks ass! Remember the days of the AMD K range of cpus, those damn things looked like cartridges for the old NES systems.

Samsung interested in buying AMD.

Well now's the perfect time, their shares are quite cheap. I think a Samsung + AMD combo could be a good thing. At least then Intel and Nvidia might have to properly start stepping up their game to stay competitive.

They need the R&D money too:

that would be awesome news. But i am not sure how the licensing for x86 will work. As that is owned by Intel. And there some rule that it must be majorly owned by USA company or something like that. I might be wrong

The problem is that Samsung doesn't need any of AMD's other technologies in their stable, buying them would be a waste of money. They could benefit from Radeon graphics, but they can already license it for cheap. They would be able to benefit from a Skybridge processor, but that's something they can already build (and sort of do today in the new S6) with a working, functional DDR4 memory controller.

Buying into another market with slim margins isn't their end-game. They've gotten good at it with the Galaxy family and the mobile market, but it is not a profitable business for them in the long term. In fact, most of their progress thus far has really been to advance their fabrication technology, which is pretty damn good with lots of options for decent, low-leakage processes for various architectures.

The agreement between AMD and Intel really only matters with regards to a sale - if AMD is bought out by anyone or even acquired through bankruptcy processes (which is possible to get rid of their old debt), they would immediately lose the rights to the license and the license to sell their product. They'd have to spend the next six months negotiating with Intel and during that time all they would be able to sell is ARM and graphics stuff.

Instead, the best solution would be for more investment to come from Abu Dhabi and for Samsung to open up their fabs for lower costs in return for IP sharing or lower licence costs for GCN in mobile applications.
