Analyst: no more single player games by 2014

I find that a bit hard to believe, I find single player and multiplayer two different things. I dont play single player because multiplayer is unavailable, its a challenge.

Fact is more than 50% of gamers do not play multiplayer, whether its because they do not have internet or just pref single player games. This idjit needs to realise that not everything will work on multiplayer format.

Where do you get that Fact from?
Given the popularity of MMOG and games like Battlefield and Call of Duty, I'd say that it is viable for some developers to abandon the single player campaign. Less expenses in terms of writers and voice actors also add to the benefit of focusing on multiplayer exclusively.

No it wont happen, it just can't. Single campaigns are what sell so many games, only shooters are the exception, which are heavy multiplayer focussed. Besides, giving it a date not too far from now is just unrealistic.

Hmmm has anyone phoned Weskoppies and told them that this oke has escaped? That is 2.5 years away, and the majority of gamers I know have never even played online before (I have). Also, some games are just meant to be played as a single campaign.

Gaming is escapism, sometimes you want to do that with other people sometimes you don't. Quite often you just want to get away from all the bullshit of human interaction and just transport yourself to another land. I don't see that changing. Just because certain technologies make it easier to network doesn't mean you always want to.

We just have to look at the big single player games this year versus the multiplayer ones to see that single player is still as healthy as ever and is unlikely to go anywhere.

Batman: Arkham City, Biohsock Infinite, Rage, Skyrim, Assassin's Creed Revelations, Uncharted 3, Warhammer: Space Marine.

*I know some have multiplayer but I would argue most people buy them for the single player.

Personally I HATE social network integration in my games, I don't need or what that rubbish permeating my gaming experience. Thankfully this idea died down somewhat after it wasn't too successful in the few games that tried it.

No this guy doesn't seem to have a good grasp of the gaming industry, he's looking at superficial facts like the rise in social gaming and facebook gaming, the success of MMO and the habit of games like Modern Warfare (which is characterised by its multiplayer) to sell well. But this type of logic is fundamentally flawed since he's ignoring the most important part, gamer diversity.

Agreed (with most of it) It definitely is a form of escapism no matter wat game u play. In my situation, i like sport games most andalthough multiplayer is cool. i love the personal element of creating your own player and going through many seasons.

as for social network integration, i think Google Plus is going in the right direction (from what i read) where u dont spam ppl who dont care but only those in that particular circle.

I agree, this guy is on some messed up trip or something.
I've always loved single player games, its like watching a movie, only better. If all games were to phase out the single player part that would mean the death of diversity in the titles we like so much today.
Imagine playing something like Assassins Creed Brotherhood with no story and only multi player. All the aspects of the game that gives it meaning to us would be lost. It would just make gaming a cheap experience with no longevity or depth.

Your reading too much into the headline and not enough into what the guy is saying. He's not saying that the only games around in 2014 will be Battlefield and Call of Duty (without an SP campaign). He's saying that most games will have some kind of online aspect even if optional. He's not predicting the death of storylines and having fun by yourself. Most games, even pure single player games, already have some kind of online integration!

2014 is probably a bit of an eager estimate, but he's not completely off the deep end. Some time in the not too far future all games will probably have some kind of online.

Same here I love single player cause of it's advantages when you don't have anyone near you or don't feel like playing the game on the internet or don't have internet access or fast enough line to play it.

It is also beneficial when you don't have electricity for 4 days from monday lol at home and 3g is sometimes expensive and not stable :D.

I wish they would make more single player offline games instead of having an internet connection to logon to use single player.

Well imho, SP certainly won't be going anywhere. Ok yes they want for everyone in the world to have internet connection, but that won't happen either. Sp games will have to stick around until such time as the whole world has a form of a connection. The one other thing that this "veteran" doesn't take into account is that sometimes a person would like to just kick back and enjoy a session of some mindless gaming time to themself and not play with everyone else, that is why we call it personal time...
