ArchieChokes Game Creation Hobby

`
Sams is legend.
Love the books!

AH cool, nah the reason I was asking is cause I don't often see much in the way of assets before there's a solid prototype.

Yeah I love it, other books and sites go on and on about mumbo jumbo that bores me, sam is straight to the point and moves on.Does not chill there on a single point for many pages.

The reason why I have been focusing on the Asset's is because i need to set out a foundation in which my brother constructs objects that can be converted to entities later.Unfortunately all the work he has done has to be redone due to the Scheamatic's and destructions are not done.

He is using CryEngine.

ArtieChoke, I've been a developer for a long time and I've released a small game before. You are dreaming big and that's good but don't you think you should maybe start a bit smaller for a first game? It's up to you of course but wow you've picked a difficult engine and a very big game for a first project.

This is from the Unity forums:

In fact the whole thread is worth reading:
http://forum.unity3d.com/threads/184797-The-answer-to-every-Can-it-be-done-and-I-ve-lost-my-way-post

Of course that's just my advice. There are people who start a big project and finish it but it's tough. Good on you for following your dreams!

Thanks man, appreciate you taking the time to give advise.
Why would you say Cryengine Difficult?

Thing is I have already have done something 2 years ago using this as a starting point:-http://www.amazon.com/The-Game-Makers-Apprentice-ebook/dp/B00475ARJS/ref=sr_1_2?s=digital-text&ie=UTF8&qid=1373016577&sr=1-2&keywords=Game+maker
, creating a stupid pacman look alike. Then went onto http://www.amazon.com/The-Game-Make...TF8&qid=1373016577&sr=1-1&keywords=Game+maker

When I did this I honestly felt bored, felt like I was restricted and confined within a 2D world.

-Just a quick Q, can you import 3ds max files into Unity? Didn't ever go as far to import 3ds max files.

When you comment on that the engine is difficult, in what sense is it difficult.
I find it more fun than when i was using Unity, Torque 3D or even game maker studio.

ATM.Sure I can have big dreams and goals, but iv'e closed that door by making it that i first, understand C++
,get fluent with implementing Terrians, Asset's, using flow graph , Applying animation set's, Understanding CS5 and the engine, understanding 3ds max.

Then when I believe I might be able to read and understand C++ then I can start to worry about doing the Hardcore and read the Source file and make modifications and see the results.

I agree with that topic though. You will dream dream dream but not really finish anything.
So im going to finish something, make a map, fill it, edit files to put my own map in the game and the test and play.

Cryengine is designed as a FPS game so I wont be trying to anything outside of a normal FPS.
Then I can worry about making a prototype or think of a concept of a game.

When I last looked at CryEngine it wasn't well documented but to be honest, it was quite a while back. Beginning of last year I think? Things may have changed. Also it sounds like you enjoy the C++ where most people would find it to be difficult. Although don't CryEngine make use of Lua too? I can't remember.

I just always thought of Unity as easier to use. Having tons of examples, a very active community and coding in C#. My day job is coding mostly in C# after years of being a C++ developer and I just love C# to bits. Plus Unity has an asset store that's just great and speeds up development time tremendously.

I must admit though that I'm not that familiar with CryEngine and that me thinking that it's a difficult engine may be completely wrong.

I like your plan of doing things in steps. Lots of people want to do everything at once. It sounds like you are under control though. And in the end it's all about having fun. :)

Your right in that departement, it is a hell of alot easier.(But I needed a new challenge)
"Unity has an asset store that's just great and speeds up development time tremendously." You so right about this part.

This is a HUGE plus - "very active community", cry is active but almost like it takes weeks to get answer's.
Yeah it was not very well documented, but now I think they have it under control. You should have a look if you want.

Damn im jealous, I really wish that I could have had that head start in any programming. Unfortunately I only started learning about Programming 3 years ago and that was not even hardcore, cause it was SQL administration and Access, did not do alot of scripting but did a hell of alot of reverse engineering and writing simple things.
C++ takes a while to rap your head around, but I think its like any other language.(Might be wrong, through reading I will discover)
Yeah thanks I do so far, it is hell interesting, like i really cant wait to get home and read and practice.

Yeah cry does use .Lua, but thats for its action scripts (i think) could be wrong, have not dived into the source code or any coding.
CryEngine is a little baby, you have to hold its hand, you have to rebuild Assets sometimes. So yeah its pretty hardcore for beginners.

Have you stopped messing around with game development?
