Are Gamers the Worst Kind of People? - MyGaming Column

This is true, I know a lot of decent gamers, but most of the time I will not play with strangers as the attitude is horrendous, then again the last couple of RDR mp games I've played were quite fun.

Very true, I laughed that Nintendo felt they needed to apologise for a price cut, really wtf! When they initially said they would give away some free games to compensate the early adopters, I thought that's really nice and considerate of them, you might feel a little hard done by if the price drops so soon, but prices do drop and it's good for consumers when they do. Anyway, if you buy stuff like that as soon as it's released, you should know that you're buying it at its highest price point, and that it will become cheaper after a while.

This is something I've been saying for ages. Gamers have an overinflated sense of entitlement. They think it's their right to get games, and if something impairs them from doing it, they want to get all pissy and throw their toys out of the cot. If you don't like a choice developers make about their game, simply don't buy it. Vote with your wallet, not your idiotic cries and whining on gaming forums.

I agree that some people do have entitlement issues especially regarding games, but I don't agree with attaching the word 'gamers' to the argument. Gamers are just the group of people who make playing games their hobby and to give that group certain properties would be stereotyping.

It's interesting how Apple was mentioned in regard to giving to stuff back for lowering prices, the fact is they HAVE done this. I can't remember which model it was exactly but I do recall that when they launched the 3G (I think) and lowered the price of original by $100, anyone who had bought the original in the past 3months was given $100 refund. Now of course they have established their yearly release cycle so you know when the new phone will hit.

As for Nintendo the games they are offering are 20yr old NES/SNES games which aren't even fully customised for the 3DS, games which I would bet most people will play for maybe 5mins. I would argue however that Nintendo's decision to give out these games and apologize isn't to 'appease whiny gamers', it's to ensure people that this is something out of the ordinary and is not typical behaviour. The reason they would want to do that is so they don't have a situation where people are hesitant to buy new Nintendo products because there might be a massive price cut 4-5months later. You can even consider that many people bought a 3DS based on the promise of good games on the horizon rather than games currently available so the fact that the device you bought for those future games is getting a 30% price cut before they even come out would be a legitimate cause for unhappiness.

I definitely agree with the whole self-righteous pirate thing as I find it funny and completely ridiculous how someone can use some design decision a game has taken as an excuse to pirate the thing. If it's not worth playing then it's not worth pirating and if it's worth pirating then it's worth paying.

The DRM, LAN and Dedicated server support issues I felt were really bad example because I feel those are legitimate reasons to complain and/or to stop supporting that product because of it. I stopped playing COD since MW2 refused to include dedicated server support, I waited a year to buy Assassin's Creed 2 because of it's DRM and I completely skipped over The Settlers 7 (even though the game interested me) because it was made virtually unplayable in SA because of DRM.

Once again I'll just say I don't like lumping people into one label of Gamers but I will say that I think many of these issues seem far bigger than what they actually are simply because you often come across the vocal minority simply because they are the ones making the most noise. As you pointed out MW2 still sold an insane amount regardless of the scream for boycott so that's just evidence that most gamers aren't really that phased. :)

The article writer must be a gamer how else can it be then a complaining article about complaining? :D

Many gamers act like little children probably because most of them still are. Whining and all of that. But the article does speak the truth. Gamers forgot to learn their manners in between slicing throats and headshots.

Maybe it's the constant wave of 12yrs olds rubbing off on the older gamers :p

But yes what you say is correct :)

WOW, this was an AMAZING article. This really encompasses everything I believe about gamers. To be perfectly honest, I think a lot of gamers are just poorly socially adjusted. They live in a virtual world where they can say what they want without real fear of any consequence. I mean if I told the school bully he was a "STD riddled idiot and that I recently had intercourse with his mother while his father watched" I would have the crap beaten out of me. As such, I believe gamers become spoilt, developing a false sense on invulnerability. Perhaps they are also acting out the insecurities they feel, by exercising their "power" in a world where maybe they are in control. As to their expectations of games...it's really strange. In no other industry are people sooo demanding. As technology progresses price drops. How many times have you bought a new TV/DVD player etc only to see it come on special a week later. Sure it sucks, but they don't owe you anything. Honestly, I've come to detest online gaming, as people are so incredibly obnoxious. Especially South Africans. I've been playing HoN for a while now and I've had a much better experience since moving across to Int servers. Maybe just because I'm playing some Korean or Russian guy that doesn't know english. But the language and racism I've experienced on the SA servers is rediculous. I played through a game where these stupid afrikaans guys continued to drop K-Bombs like it's being banned tomorrow.

Sigh...I love gaming...Just wish I loved the people more. Hope some guys read this article and just think, I need to stop being a dick.

There's your problem. :)

I don't know what it is about that type of game (MOBA) but it just seems to bring out the worst in people. I've played Halo 3, COD4, TF2 and many other games online but never have I had more grief in chat than playing DOTA/HON/LOL.

I don't specifically think GAMERS (or people who play games) are necessarily the root of all evil. Nor do I think they are bad people.
I think all humans are inherently evil, stupid, rude, selfish, and every other adjective that fits.

I don't care how "good" any one person thinks they are, more than once you've been in a shopping center you got blocked in the hallways/isles/etc by some person or group of people, and thought to yourself "DIE OF CANCER YOU IDIOTS!".

The internet merely provides a way for people to express what they really feel or think without the guilt attached to actually doing/saying it.

I have to agree - my online experiences have been far from great

Very few titles at all of any that doesn't suffer from dickery. Was actually quite funny thinking back nwn1 days were there was only 20 players and some assholes in there, then going over to international mmo scene lol it just increased exponentially. Especially wow...

Sorry to hear that... For the most part I have not had too much trouble. Then again it could have something to do with the games I play online. Dungeons and Dragons Online is almost a solo game, and you just have too pick the right serves in Black Ops
